What are the responsibilities and job description for the 2025 Summer Human Resources Internship position at WATER DISTRICT 1 OF JOHNSON COUNTY?
The purpose of this position is to take an active and engaging role to learn from and assist the Human Resources staff under the direction of the Human Resources Manager.

Compensation: $18/hr.
Essential Functions

- Assist with and carry out special projects as assigned. Examples of potential projects include:
- Developing Requests for Proposals to solicit outside firms for contractual work.
- Updating retirement plans and relevant data.
- Construct materials to inform, update and engage employees about benefit plans or other human resources programs.
- Coordinating and assisting organization-wide employee functions and events.
- Assisting and facilitating learning and development sessions for WaterOne employees.
- Supporting HRIS related projects.
- Supporting projects and/or initiatives related to safety and security functions.
- Express interest and learn from various departments of the organization by shadowing and working with different dynamics of a public water utility.
- Assist with routine administrative work.
- Assist with personnel file audit and compliance information.
- Conduct various peer organization surveys to research, develop and gain understanding of HR policies and respective proposals.
- Assist with recruitment activities such as resume screening and reference checks.
- Attend meetings regarding projects as assigned. Must attend at least one (1) WaterOne Board Meeting.
- Write specifications, memos, and letters as assigned.
- Performs other job duties as assigned.
Required Education, Skills, and Experience
- Must at a minimum be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, and current enrollment in a degree program related to human resources, public administration, business administration or a closely related field.
- Aptitude to continue a career in management /administrative fields in the public or non-profit sectors.
- Requires the ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Must be able to handle multiple tasks concurrently, meet deadlines, work independently, and exercise good judgment.
- Must be able to create and maintain accurate records and reports.
- Proficient with the Microsoft Office suite of programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Requires good interpersonal skills, strong oral and written communications skills, and good listening skills.
- Must commit to 12-13 week duration of the summer internship from May 19th until August 8th.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and continuously meet WaterOne driving standards.
- Must pass post offer medical exam, including background verification and drug screen (may not apply to current employees).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally lift/or move up to 20 pounds. The employee must be able to use a computer for multiple hours a day. The employee must be able to move occasionally from one location to another or be able to remain in a stationary position for up to several hours a day. The employee must be in possession of a licenses and be able to operate a vehicle at any given time.

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
