What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Volunteer Ministries position at Water Street Mission?

Job Summary: Serve as a member of the People and Culture Team directing the Volunteer Ministries team. Lead the ministry into growth in quality and effectiveness in its mission areas and in relevant objectives in the Strategic Plan. Establish and execute strategic direction of the High Volunteer Engagement vision for Water Street Mission while overseeing the Volunteer Ministries team and collaborating with staff volunteer managers.

- Work in full coordination with other WSM staff at all times to identify, report and respond appropriately to any potential threats to the safety and wellbeing of guests
- Embody, encourage and cultivate WSM culture, purpose, mission and values in words and actions
Role Specific Responsibilities
- Uphold the High Impact Volunteer vision for Water Street Mission that includes an understanding that volunteerism is often the vehicle that God uses to speak to hearts and grow a person's Christian faith.
- Create and continuously improve workflow that recruits and retains volunteers helping them become more deeply committed to WSM and our unique approach to restoring the lives of individuals experiencing homelessness.
- Support the Volunteer Manager efforts in volunteer recruitment, marketing, screening interviews, and appreciation.
- Coordinate with a cohort of Water Street Mission staff to ensure that volunteer needs are communicated and recruited according to the needs of the department, and that the department has the necessary leadership and tools ready for the volunteers when they are ready to serve.
- Provide leadership to the implementation of a High Impact Volunteer model throughout the organization.
- Encourage and equip WSM staff in ‘best practices' in volunteer engagement through intentional training of WSM support staff who coordinate volunteers for their ministry.
- Assist Church Ambassadors in the integration of volunteering into the Spiritual Formation ministry of churches.
- Function as primary administrator and architect of the volunteer management database (VolunteerHub) to ensure efficient and effective use across all campus ministries.
- Support Volunteer Manager with facilitation of Encounter Sessions when needed.
- Works to standardize policy and aspects of volunteering across campus including maintaining and regularly revising volunteer policies for WSM.
- Work with marketing to produce Volunteer communications including brochures, handbooks, newsletters, postings and special events.
- Establish, with the collaboration of the People and Culture team, training and development programs and objectives based in WSM Strategic Plan development and best practices.
- Participate in volunteer advocacy organizations in the community.
- Participate in periodic public speaking engagements for the ministry.
Education and Experience: Experience in a leadership/supervisory capacity. Four years minimum experience working with staff and/or volunteers, developing systems and programs to support growth. Experience growing relationships, delivering a high level of customer service, strong organization and process management skills. Experience working with or managing a CSM/CRM Database. Education and/or experience in organizational development or management. Strong evidence of active Christian formation, spiritual maturity, and wise leadership.
