Job Summary:
The Wastewater Operator in Training (OIT) is an entry-level position responsible for assisting in the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities. Under the guidance of certified operators, OIT will learn the processes involved in treating wastewater to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and public health standards.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Duties:
- Assist in monitoring and adjusting wastewater treatment processes.
- Learn to operate pumps, valves, aerators, and other facility equipment.
- Perform routine sampling and laboratory testing to analyze water quality.
- Record operational data, including flow rates, chemical usage, and test results.
Maintenance & Safety:
- Participate in routine maintenance of treatment plant equipment.
- Assist in cleaning tanks, pipes, filters, and other system components.
- Follow safety procedures and use personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Learn emergency response procedures for system malfunctions and spills.
Regulatory Compliance:
- Become familiar with local, state, and federal wastewater regulations.
- Assist in maintaining records and reports required by regulatory agencies.
- Support environmental compliance efforts to meet permit requirements.
Training & Development:
- Work toward obtaining state-required wastewater operator certification.
- Attend training sessions, workshops, and on-the-job instruction.
- Develop knowledge of treatment plant operations, equipment, and safety protocols.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Coursework in environmental science, chemistry, biology, or related fields is a plus.
- No prior experience required; on-the-job training provided.
Skills & Abilities:
- Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to learn equipment operation.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow procedures.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Basic math and computer skills for data entry and reporting.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
Licenses & Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Must be willing to obtain a state wastewater operator certification within 1 year of employment.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Work involves exposure to chemicals, odors, and outdoor elements.
- Requires lifting up to 50 lbs., climbing ladders, and standing for extended periods.
- Work may include weekends, holidays, and emergency callouts as needed.

Pay: $23.00 - $28.00 per hour
