SCOPE OF POSITION:



The Nursing Supervisor and Clinical Education Resource Associate is a dual role covering administrative nursing supervision while acting as a hands-on resource for clinical staff working on off-shifts. This position is accountable for ensuring the effective and timely provision of patient care and flow for the assigned shift including resolving operational difficulties that cross-departmental or functional lines, and providing operational direction to shift supervisory, clinical, and administrative personnel.


Additionally, acting as an organizational resource, this position collaborates with the Clinical Education Team to provide clinical, educational, and professional support for the nursing staff. This position, which requires advanced /expert clinical nursing skill and knowledge, is designed to enhance clinical support for patients and will serve as a resource and role model to staff in professional practice. This position has a dual reporting matrix and will report to the Director Nursing Staffing and Patient Flow and the Director of Clinical Education.




RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Assume accountability for all operations relating to patient care and patient flow during the assigned shift. Functions as a liaison among all areas and departments of the hospital and provides administrative nursing direction.
  • Interpret and enforce institutional wide policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Assure that adequate staffing resources are available within Patient Care Services in accordance with approved staffing plans under the oversight of the Director Nursing Staffing and Patient Flow
  • Ensure quality patient care by monitoring clinical performance and maintaining nursing standards through effective teamwork.
  • Identify operational problems and emergency situations and initiates actions and consults with appropriate personnel.
  • Actively participate in committees and professional development activities.
  • Respond to requests for patient care equipment and supplies in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that the department is tracking and monitoring the key patient flow metrics so there is consistent processes and structure on all shifts including the weekends.
  • Perform as a clinical expert/resource to maintain and improve nursing practice on the shift under the oversight of the Director of Clinical Education.


  • Validate competencies and skills based on employee specific needs assessment
  • Provide/coordinate experiential and Unit/Department specific learning opportunities in collaboration with Clinical Education.


  • Support hospital-wide initiatives through education and communication to assigned staff
  • Identify and communicate clinical competency issues to the appropriate Clinical Director & Educator
  • Facilitate efficient on-going care on units, participating in special functions as needed. Assist in short term crisis’ that include, but are not limited to Code 3, Rapid Responses, Trauma Alerts, ICU transport for radiological procedures and troubleshooting equipment


  • Incorporate evidence-based research into clinical practice.


  • Provide consultation to health care providers and others to influence care plans, enhance ability to provide health care and affect change in systems.


  • Educate staff and students, formally or informally, to enhance their ability to provide patient care.


  • Work with the Medical Care Team to facilitate patient flow and appropriateness of level of care to patient condition.
  • Rounds through the Emergency Department and Clinical units to ensure patient admissions and transfers are expedited in appropriate manner.
  • Maintain and develop own clinical expertise and knowledge in specialty nursing practice


  • Performs all other duties as assigned.



REQUIREMENTS:



  • Sophisticated troubleshooting, clinical and interpersonal skills in order to successfully deal with constant operational decisions, as well as dealing with people of diverse goals and professional language.
  • Ability to work in an environment that includes exposure to all patient elements i.e., bloodborne pathogens, physical requirements: lifting and pulling of patients, transporting patients on stretchers and in wheelchairs, standing and walking.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in nursing required, Master’s Degree preferred


  • Current CT RN license.


  • BLS/ACLS certification required.


  • At least three (3) years recent acute care clinical experience (five (5) years preferred)
  • At least three years of progressively more responsible management experience
  • Previous/current preceptor experience required


  • Evidence of continuing education, experiences, and competency in the acute care area necessary.


  • Maintenance of all above licenses and certifications required.


  • Must have basic computer skills and ability to access internet and other programs applicable to Waterbury Hospital procedures.
  • Perform automated functions that fall within job responsibility.
