Working Conditions/Physical Demands:

Requires frequent lifting and transporting of equipment, materials, and snow of 20 pounds, occasional lifting of 50 pounds, and transporting of equipment and/or furniture of over 50 pounds. Use of proper moving equipment is required. The ability and manual dexterity to operate hand tools and power tools and equipment. Use of noisy equipment required. Most of the day spent standing, with frequent walking and bending required. Normal hearing and vision with the ability to discriminate multiple colors necessary. Required to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. May be exposed to paint/solvent fumes and odors. Hard hat, mask, gloves, gown, eye and ear protection and protective equipment must be worn as conditions dictate. May be required to work around animals. Possible exposure to body fluids and hazardous material.

Essential Functions:

A multi-purpose position to perform manual tasks in the maintenance, repair, alteration and remodeling of buildings and the maintenance of grounds. Assignments are varied and work may be performed independently or in teams, with the worker responsible for determining appropriate work methods, tools and materials for most assignments. Assignments involve numerous trades and skills, such as rough and finished carpentry, plumbing, painting and minor electrical repairs. Operation of agency vehicles and powered equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Perform skilled work in maintenance, repair, alterations, remodeling and painting of buildings.
  2. Maintain skill in the use and care of hand tools and power equipment necessary to perform various maintenance and repair tasks.
  3. Prepare surfaces, including installation and finishing of sheet rock and trim, and mix and apply paint and /or other coatings to a variety of surfaces both inside and outside of buildings using brushes, rollers and spray guns.
  4. Complete daily, weekly and monthly inspections and preventative maintenance on systems, equipment, vehicles and facilities, as assigned.
  5. Prioritize work to ensure that safety hazards are eliminated immediately and that all assigned tasks are completed in a timely manner.
  6. Respond to emergency maintenance and repair requests as required. Take appropriate corrective action as necessary, reporting major problems, ensuring safety and proper functioning of agency facilities and equipment.
  7. Maintain high levels of safety, security, care and responsibility for equipment, tools and work sites, ensuring that children/youth, staff and visitors do not have access to dangerous equipment, tools or hazardous conditions.
  8. Maintain a valid Connecticut or home state Driver’s License, operating agency vehicles and equipment both on campus and in the community as required to complete job assignments.
  9. Perform outside grounds keeping duties as assigned including mowing, raking, digging, snow removal, plowing and setting up equipment, tents, seating, etc. for special events.
  10. Maintain home telephone service and be available on-call to respond to maintenance problems during times of emergency or special need. Be available, as necessary, to work weekends, holidays and on overtime during time of emergencies and/or special needs and meet timelines for critical projects.
  11. Attend maintenance meetings and training sessions as scheduled, arriving prepared for active participation.
  12. Demonstrate care in work to ensure the highest possible quality and timely completion.
  13. Ensure that work is structured around agency program activities to minimize disruption.
  14. Assist Skilled Tradesman as needed.
  15. Maintain knowledge of and follow agency policies and procedures as contained in the WCS Personnel Handbook, WCS Procedure Manual, and departmental manuals.
  16. Function as a positive role model for all students and staff at the Waterford Country School.
  17. Maintain an awareness of and sensitivity to the cultural and socioeconomic differences present among the service population and fellow staff members of WCS, ensuring that cultural needs are respected and supported through the delivery of services and the development and implementation of agency programs and policies in a manner that is free from discrimination and bias relating to race, ethnicity, age, disability, gender, sexual orientation, status as a victim of domestic violence or religious belief.
  18. Other duties as assigned by the Director of Buildings and Grounds

Qualifications


Qualifications:

High School education and/or journeyman tradesman with three to five years experience in one or more skilled trades. State of Connecticut or home state drivers license.
