JOB TITLE: Instrument and Sterile Processing

JOB SUMMARY:
The instrument and sterile processing technician serves as a member of the healthcare team and provides technical support by selecting, assembling, and processing instruments and equipment for use at the center. Responsible for the cleaning, decontamination, maintenance and preservation, and sterile processing, of all instruments, equipment, and non-sterile supplies at the center. Responsible for the care and preservation of all instrumentation. Remains calm and effective in stressful situations and provides support in emergency situations as directed. Demonstrates ability to prioritize, organize and multi-task. Able to take direction well but also be self directed and motivated. Requires a high degree of responsibility, responsiveness and confidentiality. Functions as a team member in an effective and efficient manner to maintain a safe workplace environment. Flexible with work schedule to meet center needs supports the mission and vision of the organization.
DUTIES:
A. Sterile Processing
· Ensure proper instruments and equipment are ready for use in a timely manner.
· Evaluate and establish priority of duties on a daily basis.
· Ensure sterile processing area is appropriately stocked and inventoried with necessary items for processing.
· Selecting and assembling instruments into specific sets as appropriate or as designated by specific instrument preference lists.
· Identifying all sets, instruments and equipment with proper labeling of each.
· Processing instruments, which includes but not limited to: cleaning, decontamination, maintaining, handling, storing, and/or sterilizing surgical instruments and power equipment.
· Schedules and performs preventive maintenance care as able on all instruments.
· Ensure proper documentation of all instrument processing (i.e. biologicals, DART tests, implant biologicals, etc.) as required by regulatory and accreditation agencies.
· Knowledge of autoclaves and Steris machines, their proper function and appropriate use.
· Proficient in all aspects of sterile processes.
· Current on sterile processing guidelines (ANSI) and ensures that all policies and procedures reflect these guidelines.
· Maintains safe work environment (handling sharps, needles, blades, etc) and practices by following Standard Precautions.
· Available as a resource person to staff re: instrument sets and the sterilization process.
· Maintains a record of all instruments out for repair and date of return.
· Maintains a record of borrowed instruments and assures their return in a timely manner.
· Communicates to staff status of instruments out for repair.
· Readily available to answer questions/needs during scheduled surgery hours.
· Communicate safety concerns to the OR team leader (improper handling of sharps, needles, blades by OR staff).
· Perform hand washing according to policy and procedure.
· Maintain integrity of instruments.
· Anticipate surgeon’s and staff needs to assure interruptions in surgery schedule.
· Clean and disinfect all tables, counter surfaces, stands and floor in area as scheduled and as needed.
· Conducts self in a professional manner.
· Knowledge of surgeon preferences, procedures, instrumentation, and equipment.
· Knowledge of all instrumentation, equipment and their appropriate care.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Mobility to stand, walk, run, and respond quickly and carefully within the confines of the sterile processing area and also in emergency situations.
· Mobility to bend, stoop, pull, and lift.
· Good eye/hand coordination.
· Ability to push/pull sterile processing carts/racks, and other equipment.
· High school diploma
· Current C.R.C.S.T. (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) preferred.
· Two years of current experience preferred in the OR setting.
· Annual completion of specified mandatory competencies and in-services.
· Ability to work flexible hours to meet Center’s needs.
