Job Description
Title: Van Driver FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Classification: Operational Support
Immediate Supervisor: Director of Operational Services
Job Summary: Responsible for providing safe and reliable transportation for specialized routes to include special education, homeless, and other students.
Hiring Specifications:
Education
- High school diploma or equivalency
- Additional training in areas related to scope of responsibility not required but is considered a plus
Certification
- Appropriate State of Iowa license and endorsements required for the vehicle assigned, or ability to obtain after hire
- Appropriate medical qualification
Experience
- At least 18 years of age
- Previous van or bus driving experience is not required but is considered a plus

Job Duties:
- Follows a planned route, making scheduled stops to pick up or drop off passengers
- Assists students to ensure they are on the correct vehicle for the location that they need to go to for school, home, babysitter or other location as approved by supervisor
- Communicates with the coordinator via two-way radio during the route; provides updates to the dispatcher and reports emergencies, traffic patterns, or accidents
- Assists passengers on and off the vehicle when help is needed
- Reports any mechanical issues with the vehicle such as brakes, steering, or other issues
- Runs an evacuation drill and ensures students know what to do in case of an emergency
- Conducts a pre-trip and post-trip inspection and completes appropriate forms
- Communicates with the Transportation Department and school personnel any concerns
relating to a student's behavior or medical problems by submitting required behavior reports
- Attends in-service meeting and training courses as assigned
- Maintains proper records, documentations and communicates effectively both orally and in writing
- Performs as a leader such that student safety is maximized
- Adheres to all State and local driving regulations and qualifications
- Reports accidents or traffic tickets immediately to supervisor
- Maintains appropriate behavior of student in the vehicle at all times
- Keeps vehicle clean inside and out
- Adheres to district and State policies on physical contact with children
- Attends work on a prompt and regular basis
- Maintains satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees
- Maintains confidentiality
- Completes mandatory trainings and tasks on time as directed
- Assists with other duties as assigned
