Objective
WPS seeks a Grades 6-12 Social Studies/History Curriculum Coordinator to ensure all educators have access to the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to provide every student with a high-quality, culturally and linguistically sustaining, and well-rounded education. The coordinator will support educators in delivering an equitable, engaging curriculum aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks that fosters critical thinking, historical understanding, and civic engagement.
Position Overview
The Social Studies/History Curriculum Coordinator is a member of a collaborative 12-person team of Directors and Curriculum Coordinators supporting curriculum, instruction, and assessment. This position reports directly to the Watertown High School principal and the Assistant Superintendent. This position is responsible for providing high-quality professional learning, curricular guidance, support, training, coaching, and modeling. The coordinator will work closely with school-based teams, teachers, administrators, and community partners to enhance Social Studies/History instruction and ensure equitable opportunities for all students. The Coordinator must have a strong equity focus, a strong belief that all students can and will succeed, and that our students’ opportunities must be limitless.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provide World-Class, Practice-Changing Professional Learning
- Support teachers in implementing research-based instructional practices using standards-aligned instructional materials to improve student outcomes
- Develop and deliver professional development to support the implementation of the 2018 History and Social Studies Framework.
- Create, curate, and identify professional development tools and resources that promote effective instructional practices and formative assessments.
- Design and provide professional learning opportunities for teachers, teacher leaders, and administrators.
- Model effective instructional strategies and provide in-classroom coaching to improve Social Studies/History instruction.
- Responsible for facilitating regular staff department meetings.
- Stay informed on issues in Social Studies education through participation in conferences and relevant learning opportunities.
Ensure Student Access to Standards-Aligned, Equitable Curriculum
- Develop processes for monitoring the implementation of instructional tools, resources, and professional development.
- Support district-wide priorities and policies by aligning curricular resources to the 2018 Massachusetts History and Social Studies Framework.
- Create and maintain scope and sequence documents, pacing guides, and assessments that align with state standards.
- Provide guidance on the selection and implementation of instructional materials and resources.
- Collaborate with school leaders to ensure culturally responsive teaching practices and inclusive representation in curriculum content.
- Facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration to integrate Social Studies concepts into other subjects through project-based learning and inquiry-based approaches.
- Implement strategies to increase the representation of historically marginalized students in rigorous coursework, including AP Social Studies classes.
Advance Systems of Collaboration and Continuous Improvement
- Collaborate meaningfully with school and district leaders, teachers, and staff to ensure consistent Social Studies instruction across grades 6-12.
- Provide ongoing support through job-embedded coaching and professional development.
- Communicate regularly with stakeholders, including teachers, students, families, and community members.
- Assist in the development and analysis of common assessments to monitor student progress.
- Support principals in the supervision and evaluation of Social Studies instruction.
- Lead data analysis and facilitate conversations about student outcomes to inform instructional improvements. Develop and manage the program budget alongside the Assistant Superintendent and principals.

Supervisory Responsibilities
- Responsible for supervision and evaluation of some grade 6-12 Social Studies/History Educators.
Performance Responsibilities
- Teach 0.2 FTE in AP-level history classes.
- Serve as the school liaison with community organizations to partner with our teachers and courses, including the implementation of the Civics Action Project.
- Work with district leadership and the school committee in budgeting and planning for curricular initiatives, professional development, and program reviews.
Qualifications - Required
- Master’s Degree in Education, History, or related field.
- Massachusetts Supervisory/Director’s License (History/Social Studies CORE).
- Massachusetts History and Social Studies License for Grades 6-12.
- Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Administrator Endorsement.
- Minimum of 5 years of successful Social Studies/History teaching experience in an urban education setting.
- Strong understanding of the Massachusetts History and Social Studies Curriculum Framework and best practices in curriculum and instruction.
- Experience in providing professional development and instructional coaching.
- Demonstrated commitment to educational equity and culturally responsive practices.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Qualifications - Preferred
- Experience in facilitating cross-disciplinary collaboration.
- Bilingual or multilingual proficiency.
- Familiarity with instructional technology tools and their application in Social Studies instruction.
- Knowledge of effective strategies for supporting multilingual learners and students with disabilities.
- Experience in program evaluation and data analysis to support continuous improvement.
Physical Demands
Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, handheld learning devices, and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
