Nature of Work

Under direct supervision of the Senior Civil Engineer or Senior Engineering Technician, the Civil Engineering Intern performs civil engineering computations, design assistance, field inspections, and layout. Salary depends on qualifications.

Hours of Work This position typically works Monday - Friday from 7 : 00 - 3 : 30 p.m. Evening, weekend, and overtime hours may be required as necessary.

Essential Functions

Primary Essential Work Functions :

  • Performs civil engineering computations, design assistance, field inspections, and layout.
  • Assists a field party on construction, property location, or other survey work.
  • Operates transit and level.
  • Assists to view lines, angles, distances, and elevations.
  • Locates boundaries and property lines, and records topography.
  • Lays out construction surveys.
  • Keeps field notes and makes sketches and computations.
  • Assists survey party members in the correct use of survey equipment and instruments.
  • Assists with plans and designs for public works projects.
  • Must meet expectations of the work functions and knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
  • Must comply with organizational and departmental policies.
  • Must comply with data practices policies and standards relative to not public data. Any access to not public data should be strictly limited to accessing the data that are necessary to fulfill the employment responsibility. While data are being accessed, incumbent should take reasonable measures to ensure the not public data are not accessed by individuals without a work reason. Once the work reason to access the data is reasonably finished the not public data must be properly stored according to city policy and the Minnesota Statutes.

Other Work Functions :

  • May perform engineering drafting.
  • May perform drafting and computing operations involved in the preparation of a wide variety of engineering drawings and plans, including legal descriptions, assessment maps, rights-of-way, State or Federal aid maps, plans for street, water or drainage projects, and the updating of City maps.
  • Performs physical and mental demands and work environment requirements for this position.
  • Attendance during regularly scheduled work hours and outside regular hours as necessary.
  • Effective and respectful communication and interactions with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and community customers.
  • Performs other related work as assigned or apparent.
  • Desirable Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications of Education and Experience :

  • Candidate must be enrolled and accepted in a civil engineering or construction management curriculum, with bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management or related field in progress; or enrolled and accepted in a civil technician program with an associate's degree in civil technology in progress.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive in the state of Minnesota.
  • Conditions of Employment :

  • Must successfully complete a pre-employment background check.
  • Must have physical mobility to work around field construction sites, climb ladders, access for inspection of aerial, buried and surfacing construction improvements and facilities.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces under normal outdoor temperature conditions as well as in-office environment.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work in confined spaces under all normal outdoor temperature conditions, as well as in-office environment.
  • Ability to physically negotiate and inspect all types of construction sites.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.
  • Ability to make arithmetical computations with speed and accuracy.
  • Ability to prepare reports and maintain records.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Does not qualify for insurance benefits.
