About the Role
The Campus Safety Officer Supervisor is responsible for overseeing Campus Safety Officers and ensuring the protection and services for students, faculty, staff, guests, and college property. They supervise patrols, emergency response, and service-oriented activities in alignment with the Campus Police Department's mission and objectives.
This position also oversees the Building Emergency Response Leader (BERL) Program. Reporting to the Campus Police Chief, this position may be the sole college resource available at an assigned satellite campus during the work shift.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise Campus Safety Officers, including scheduling, reviewing work, approving time sheets, and providing coaching and development opportunities.
- Review and approve written reports and documents prepared by Campus Safety Officers to ensure professionalism and thoroughness.
- Prepare performance evaluation reports for supervised staff.
- Assist in preparing the annual budget and state/federal mandated reports.
- Collaborate with college students, faculty, and staff to address campus safety and security issues.
- Perform all duties of a Campus Safety Officer, including patrols, securing buildings, and checking for safety violations and crime.
- Support and assist uniformed campus police officers in enforcing regulations and applicable statutes.
- Act as an initial responder during emergencies, issuing warnings and calling for immediate assistance.
- Monitor weather conditions, surveillance cameras, and alarm systems, implementing emergency notifications and evacuation plans.
- Conduct traffic control functions on college property and provide courteous services to students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
- Report safety-related issues and document incidents, including sensitive or confidential information.
- Serve as a resource of college information, assisting students, faculty, staff, and visitors in locating facilities and activities.
- Assist with locking and unlocking doors and securing assigned buildings.
- Attend department meetings and required trainings.
- Maintain professionalism and courtesy in interactions with students, staff, the public, and law enforcement officers.
- Oversee the Building Emergency Response Leader (BERL) Program.
- Perform other assigned duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred.
- Minimum of two years relevant work experience in a security or law enforcement role, with at least 1 year in a supervisory capacity preferred.
- Experience in a campus safety or educational institution setting is highly desirable.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential, along with the ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism and tact.
- Experience in conducting investigations, writing and approving reports, and maintaining accurate records is preferred.
- Previous experience working with diverse populations and handling various security-related technologies, such as surveillance systems and access control systems, is highly preferred.
- Valid Illinois driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Certification in CPR, First Aid, and AED is desirable.
- Physical capability for exertion and quick response during emergencies.
- Maintain physical fitness through on-going evaluation as deemed necessary by the Campus Police Chief or the Office of Human Resources.
- Ability to pass a comprehensive background check investigation.
- Willingness to rotate to all the Colleges campuses.
- Ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, email, and internet use.
