The Bus Driver is responsible for safely transporting passengers to their destinations while providing exceptional customer service. This role involves following scheduled routes, ensuring passenger safety, maintaining a clean and operational vehicle, and adhering to traffic and safety regulations.
Position Criteria:
- Valid Iowa driver’s license, required
- Class D (chauffeur) license with the "3" (passenger) endorsement, required (Class A or Class B CDL will supersede the need for the Class D requirement)
- School Bus Driver Authorization, may obtain after hire
Performance Criteria:
- Operate the bus safely and responsibly on assigned routes, following local, state and federal laws and regulations and organizational policies.
- Follow designated routes accurately, in accordance with time schedules and stops.
- Perform routine operator maintenance to including but not limited to: pre/post inspections, sweeping interior, wiping upholstery, cleaning windshields, reporting equipment defects and presenting bus for maintenance.
- Assist in providing the necessary safeguards to prevent loss of or damage to property, or failure of mechanical equipment. Report any mechanical issues to the operations department.
- Greet and assist passengers withholding and uploading including those with special needs (e.g. wheelchair users in boarding and exiting the bus)
- Maintain a friendly, approachable attitude and respond to passenger inquiries in a polite manner.
- Enforce passenger safety rules, including the use of seatbelts (if applicable) and the restriction of unsafe behavior.
- Maintain appropriate student behavior on the bus and report policy infractions as appropriate.
- Adjust routes based on traffic conditions, weather, or emergency detours, and inform passengers of any significant changes.
- Communicate with dispatch or supervisors regarding route changes, delays, or any incidents.
- Monitor passengers to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Keep and handle all student information in a confidential manner.
- Handle emergency situations appropriately and calmly, including assisting passengers in the event of an accident or other incidents.
- Complete and maintain accurate records, including mileage logs, incident reports, and time sheets.
- Report accidents, traffic violations, or other safety-related incidents to supervisors.
- Participate in & complete all training pertaining to the job.
- Assist operations department as needed and perform other duties as assigned.
