What are the responsibilities and job description for the Marching Band Percussion Instructor position at Waukegan Community Unit District 60?
- Assist with the rehearsal and performance preparation of the drumline and front ensemble sections, including but not limited to snare drum, bass drum, tenor drums, marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, bells, synthesizer (piano), timpani, concert bass drum/gong (tam-tam), and auxiliary percussion players.
- Provide individual and sectional drumline and front ensemble instruction as needed during weekly after-school rehearsals, band camp, and other designated times, along with overall marching band instruction.
- Attend all scheduled rehearsals, including but not limited to:
- 2-3 day summer Mini Camp rehearsal
- 2-week Late-Summer/Early-Fall Band Camp
- 3 weekly after-school rehearsals throughout the season
- 4-5 Friday night or Saturday football games
- 3-4 Saturday marching field competitions
- Select parades and community performances
- Drumline specific performances
- Collaborate with the director(s) and other band staff members to ensure a cohesive and successful program.
- Develop and implement percussion-related warm-ups, exercises, and drills to enhance the drumline and front ensemble section's technical skill, tone, and performance abilities.
- Oversee drumline equipment and instruct on drumline cadences.
- Oversee and coordinate front ensemble equipment and electronics (microphones/sound system) engineering for the front ensemble.
- Support students in both their technical and musical development, fostering a positive, professional, safe, respectful, and motivating environment.
- Assist with logistics, such as equipment and front ensemble setup, trailer loading and unloading, and student management during events and rehearsals.
- Collaborate in the planning of the creative show concept including musical selection, concept input, and sound/visual design.
- Previous experience performing in a high school, drum corps, winter percussion, and/or collegiate marching band on a percussion instrument (drumline and/or front ensemble). Prior drum corps, competitive high school or collegiate marching band, or winter percussion teaching experience is preferred but not required, particularly in percussion instruction.
- Strong knowledge of battery drumline instruments, drumline cadences, marching band techniques, keyboard mallet percussion, concert percussion techniques, electronics integration, and front ensemble/drumline-specific repertoire and pedagogy.
- Ability to work effectively with high school students, staff, and parents in a collaborative and supportive manner.
- A commitment to upholding a positive, encouraging, and inclusive environment.
- Availability to attend required events, including Friday night football games, Saturday marching competitions, weekly after-school rehearsals, band camp, and select parades and community performances, including drumline specific performances.
