Come join Waukesha County's Department of Public Works Fleet Division as a Mechanic. 
 
The ideal candidate will have proven experience performing preventive maintenance and major repair work on a variety of vehicles, such as but not limited to automobiles, trucks, tractors, bulldozers, graders, mowers, small engines, and other equipment.  

Work Schedule:  Monday through Friday, 7 am to 3:30 pm with occasional overtime hours on nights, weekends, and at odd hours when emergency conditions require such duty.

Compensation and Benefits
The 2025 starting hourly rate range is $28.03 to $32.56 (full range extends to $37.09). Successful candidates will be eligible for performance-based merit increases and non-base performance awards.  In addition, the County provides a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, vision, life insurance, generous paid time off, and participation in the Wisconsin Retirement System.

Prior to hiring, the final candidate is required to pass work/education/certification reference(s), a criminal background and driver's license check, and a Physical Exam consisting of a hearing test, physical, DOT drug test, musculoskeletal evaluation, vision test, and TB assessment.
  1. Performs major repairs of customer vehicles and equipment including but not limited to automobiles, trucks, tractors, bulldozers, graders, mowers, and small engines.
  2. Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment including the lubrication, oil, and filter changes, other fluid level checks and changes; performs oil and fluid analysis as required. 
  3. Performs engine exchanges, major tune-ups, transmission exchanges, and repairs of various elements of the drive train, including metal fabrication and welding. 
  4. Performs adjustments and repairs to brake, suspension, and steering systems.
  5. Operates equipment and vehicles to ensure compliance and safety standards with repairs and maintenance.
  6. Prepares records and reports as required.
  7. Designs and fabricates parts and equipment with or without plans or specifications needed to repair and replace broken vehicles or stationary equipment to make less prone to breakage and to increase safety. 
  8. Performs tire repair and maintenance through the removal of worn out or punctured tires or tubes; balances tires, maintains TPMS (tire pressure monitoring systems), and installs tires and wheels on vehicles and equipment. 
  9. Receives new vehicles and equipment; performs vehicle set-up which includes up fitting, decaling, installing communications systems, and specification validation.
  10. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, internal and external customers, vendors, and the public. 
  11. Maintains prompt, predictable, and regular attendance.
  12. May serve as Lead Mechanic in their absence. 
  13. Performs other duties as required.

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

  1. Comprehensive knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines, drive trains, electrical systems, multi-plexed electrical systems, controller area network (CAN) electronic systems, chassis components of vehicles and other motor-driven equipment.
  2. Considerable knowledge of current industry standards, procedures, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment.
  3. Considerable knowledge of safety practices in the maintenance, repair, and operation of vehicles or other motor driven equipment. 
  4. Considerable knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in fabrication, welding, and maintenance.
  5. Working knowledge of metals, their strengths and failures, and behavioral characteristics.
  6. Working knowledge of the principles, practices, and materials used in the repair of tires and tubes.
  7. Working knowledge of division, department, and County electronic devices and computerized systems.
  8. Ability to learn and utilize division, department, and County electronic devices and computerized systems to effectively perform duties and responsibilities.  
  9. Ability to keep records and make reports.
  10. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  11. Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor.
  12. Ability to withstand exposure to favorable and unfavorable weather conditions.
  13. Ability to perform work in the maintenance and repair of equipment and vehicles. 
  14. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, internal and external customers, vendors, and the public. 
  15. Ability to effectively interact with sensitivity with persons from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial, ethnic, and professional backgrounds, and persons of all ages and lifestyles.
  16. Ability to diagnose mechanical failures and defects in wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
  17. Ability to operate a wide range of vehicles and equipment for the purposes of diagnosing vehicle problems and ensuring that repairs have been properly completed.
  18. Ability to follow and carryout verbal and written instructions. 
  19. Ability to safely operate various vehicle and equipment diagnostic and repair machines, tools, and equipment. 
  20. Ability to respond at any time during emergency situations to provide mechanical support for other County operations responding to emergencies.  
You must meet these minimum Training and Experience requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Three (3) years of experience in the major overhaul and repair of diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and equipment. 
    • Recognized post high school training directly in mechanical maintenance may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to one (1) year's work experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with airbrake endorsement within six (6) months of employment.
