What are the responsibilities and job description for the Behavioral Health Unit Nurse position at Waupaca County?
As a function of the Waupaca County Department of Human Services, this position is responsible for providing care for clients of the behavioral health unit, working with physicians and other service providers to help the client remain safely in the community. These services include medication monitoring, administering injections, and providing intervention in client crises. This position works under the direct supervision of the Behavioral Health Manager of Outpatient Treatment Services and Behavioral Health Manager of Wraparound Treatment Services.
This position is further broken down into two areas of specialty, Community Support Program (CSP) Nurse and Outpatient Behavioral Health Nurse. The two positions listed are able to provide cross coverage if needed.
**This is a PART-TIME (20 Hours) position**
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Community Support Program (CSP) Nurse
Maintain client medication records and distribute medication as prescribed by the client’s medical doctor. Provide medical monitoring for CSP clients.
Screen client phone calls and client requests of psychiatrist.
Phone/Fax in doctor's orders per psychiatrist request.
Provide case management services to assigned caseload including but not limited to inpatient coordination for client caseload, completing assessments, and referrals to programs within Waupaca County Department of Human Services as well as outside programs.
Responsible for educating clients and families about psychotropic medications, their use, side effects, and their management.
Consult with Behavioral Health Manager of Outpatient Treatment Services and Behavioral Health Manager of Wraparound Treatment Services, physicians, Corporation Counsel, and other CSP team members to coordinate and monitor client progress.
Cross-train to support Outpatient Behavioral Health Nurse position.
Transport clients to appointments.

Maintain confidentiality regarding consumer's personal health information and medical needs.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Outpatient Behavioral Health Nurse
Maintain client medication records and distribute medication as prescribed by the psychiatrist.
Screen client phone calls and client requests of psychiatrist.
Phone/Fax in doctor's orders per psychiatrist request.
Complete prescription refill requests under supervision of psychiatrist. Initiate and maintain patient medication assistance program for clients.
Provide medical monitoring for behavioral health clients and document client lab results as requested by the psychiatrist.
Review and maintain all documentation of sample medication distribution. Maintain an effective system to detect and prevent diversion of sample medications.
Utilize the Wisconsin Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) as a tool to help combat the prescription drug abuse epidemic in Wisconsin and follow the Waupaca County DHS Schedule II Drug Policy.
Assist in the completion of prior authorizations through private insurance, Medicaid, and Medicare for medications as prescribed by the psychiatrists.
Responsible for educating clients and families about psychotropic medications, their use, side effects, and their management.

PERIPHERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Identify goals, objectives, and training needs for professional growth and participate in continuing education ongoing. Maintain a record of such trainings completed.
Participate in agency staffing, trainings or appear in court as required.
Other duties as assigned by the Behavioral Health Manager of Outpatient Treatment Services and Behavioral Health Manager of Wraparound Treatment Services.
EXPERIENCE: 1,000 hours of post degree supervised clinical experience with individuals diagnosed with a persistent mental illness is preferred. Community or outpatient setting preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Current certification as a registered professional nurse licensed to practice in the State of Wisconsin. Successful passing of a caregiver background check.
Working knowledge of the impacts of trauma on individual throughout the lifespan.
Safe handling and administrations of both injectable and oral medications.
Specialized knowledge of psychopharmacology.
Current knowledge of community treatment principles and use of community service providers.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to maintain agency confidentiality.
Must have available transportation to perform on-site and off-site responsibilities. Use of county vehicles is available at times.
