WAUSHARA COUNTY POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Correctional Officer
DEPARTMENT: Sheriff
FUNCTION: Under supervision, this civilian position performs work involving the care and custody of inmates in the County Jail in accordance with prescribed regulations, ordinance and law. Further, this position performs other duties as required by their immediate supervisors and above.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Supervises and cares for inmates of the County Jail within established policies and procedures.
2. Maintains discipline and enforces the rules and regulations pertaining to the facility and may employ a reasonable amount of force to quell disturbances and maintain discipline.
3. Receives and books inmates and assigns and escort inmates to cells, dormitories or Pod areas.
4. Issue uniforms, bedding and other supplies; assists in the orientation of inmates; and, assists in the operation of food service.
5. Inspects and searches inmates and their living areas for cleanliness, contraband and order.
6. May transport and oversee inmates to activities, work assignments, court and health care facilities.
7. Assigns, supervises and inspects the work of trustees engaged in maintaining the cleanliness of the facility or in the preparation of meals.
8. Performs general housekeeping and maintenance duties in the facility as needed and may assist in the operation of laundry equipment.
9. Completes violation reports of jail rules.
10. Provides a positive rehabilitative influence to inmates within the guidelines established by the Jail Administrator.
11. Observes the inmate population and makes periodic reports regarding their attitude and behavior.
12. Prepares, presents and maintains written and oral reports and records as required.
13. Dispenses and records prescribed and PRN medications to the inmate population and maybe required to administer basic first aid or CPR or both.
14. Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
15. Promote, get along and work in harmonious relationship with others including but not limited to outside agencies and county departments.
16. Be able to perform duties, follow policy and procedures independent of direct supervision.
17. Performs other duties as required and assigned
WORKING ELEMENTS:
A. Education, Training and Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent, additional training in police science or related field preferred.
- Valid Wisconsin Drivers license, no felony convictions.
B. Knowledge, Ability and Skills
- Knowledge of policies and procedures employed in receiving, releasing and maintaining the custody of prisoners. Knowledge of the Criminal Justice System, first aid principles and CPR. Knowledge of the operation and purpose of detention facilities and to the related treatment and security programs used at such facilities.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions, handle prisoners and public charges without antagonizing them or provoking disorder, and to evaluate and respond to prisoners health requirements. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Law Enforcement Officers, co-workers, the public and the inmate population. Ability to operate the computer, telephone and other office equipment. Ability to maintain and prepare accurate oral and written reports and records, and to effectively present recommendations to supervisors.
- Skill in being able to safely and effectively deal with incoming inmates who are drunk or under the influence of drugs and possibly armed. Must be able to handle several problems at once.
- Due to the 24/7 nature of the department, must be able to physically respond to work within 60 minutes.
C. Responsibility and Authority
- Reports to the Jail Administrator, Correctional Corporal.
- Responsible for the safety of the public. Responsible for property, sheets, pillows, towels, etc., issued to prisoners. This position safely guards and monitors the prisoners.
D. Working Conditions
- Work will include standing, walking, reaching, feeling, talking, hearing, vision, near vision work, low position handling, typing, chemical exposure, blood borne pathogen exposure, exposure to fumes and noxious orders. Kneeling, crouching, crawling, running, climbing, bending/twisting, low-high lifting, low-high carrying, low-high pushing/pulling, low-high handling, and the possibility of physical attack. Infrequent exposure to mechanical issues, electrical issues, heat or explosives.
