JOB TITLE: School Counselor
LOCATION: Lied Center & WSR Residential
DISTRICT: Waverly-Shell Rock Community School District
The Lied Center Program provides educational services to students with challenging behavioral needs who may also require academic support. The Lied Center Program is organized as a consortium and accepts children from many Iowa school districts. Students are transported daily to our campus from their home district and participate in a day program of learning. The primary goal is to support the student in developing the skills they need to address their difficult behaviors and eventually transition back to their resident district.
JOB SUMMARY:
The School Counselor works to maximize student success throughout a system of support. As a member of the Lied Center Student Services Team, the school counselor collaborates with team members to best support all students. The school counselor designs and manages the school counseling program throughout the building. Data is utilized to create action plans. Developmentally appropriate activities and services are provided to each student. The school counselor proactively supports social emotional learning while positively impacting achievement, attendance, and behavior.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
Meets regularly with students to mentor and support
Develops student safety plans in collaboration with students and team members
Teaches regularly scheduled social and emotional learning skill lessons across all grade levels
Delivers evidence-based supplemental and intensive social-emotional learning interventions
Provides counseling to students to address a variety of skills
Advocates for students in team meetings
Participates on the building data and problem-solving team
Visits classrooms to positively support
Collaborates with Student Services Team members along with teachers, paraprofessionals, and interventionists
(Student Services Team: Lead Behavior Interventionist, Social Worker, School Resource Officer, School Nurse, Principal)Utilizes CPI de-escalation and movement techniques
Engages in school-wide activities - assemblies, celebrations, etc.
Creates and maintains student schedules aligned with academic progress and needs
Tracks academic credits and graduation progress to ensure students are on path to earn diplomas
Coordinates transcript reviews and ensures necessary coursework is completed for graduation
Communicates with sending/receiving districts regarding transcript transfers and enrollment status
Supports postsecondary planning by providing guidance on high school completion, career pathways, and college readiness

Background in working with children who have experienced trauma
Background in working with children in residential placements
