Position Summary:
The Master Mechanic is an integral part of the production of WayFare products. In order to ensure uninterrupted production of product, the excellent condition of the WayFare facility and equipment must be consistently maintained. The Master Mechanical role requires leadership, ingenuity, initiative, flexibility, appreciation of physical labor, respect for mechanical and maintenance best practices, and efficiency. This position keeps equipment and the building in world-class condition and is responsible for managing all installation, repair, and upkeep of WayFare plant equipment and facilities. This role is also on-call and must be available during off hours to return to the plant if needed.
Essential Functions:
- Ensure operational efficiency of all WayFare plant equipment, including predictive, preventative and emergency maintenance and repairs.
- Disassemble mechanical equipment, identify faulty/worn parts, replace, reassemble, and test.
- Conduct preventive and predictive maintenance schedules on mechanical equipment such as pumps, motors, compressors, exhaust fans, blowers, and electrical controls.
- Work with sanitation team to disassemble and ensure proper cleaning and reassembly of equipment.
- Operate, inspect, and maintain ammonia refrigeration and freezer equipment, such as pumps, condensers, compressors, evaporators, valves, and other utility system components.
- Troubleshoot and repair ammonia refrigeration systems.
- Maintain/monitor various utilities such as heat, water, and HVAC to ensure proper working order is maintained.
- Observe equipment or machinery while in operation to detect malfunctions.
- Install, troubleshoot, and maintain mechanical equipment, piping systems, and electrical controls/components in accordance with manufacturer’s specification.
- Perform welding, cutting, light fabrication, basic electrical installation, troubleshooting, and repair.
- Complete all required documentation; maintain records of maintenance and repair activities.
- Maintain clean work area, mechanical rooms, maintenance rooms, and job site at all times.
- Perform minor sanitation and job site clean-up to maintain sanitary conditions.
- Operate all equipment in a safe and efficient manner; utilize proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Follow and implement all plant safety, food safety, and general plant and Company rules and policies.
- Use Good Manufacturing Practices for handling all equipment; follow QA procedures and system.
- Work with QA team to ensure compliance with all BRC standards.
- Ensure that all critical parts are on site and available for necessary maintenance and repairs of WayFare plant equipment.
- Become a subject matter expert in all WayFare plant equipment; seek out/participate in trainings and obtain certifications critical to the role.
- Develop or improve maintenance procedures for all WayFare plant equipment and facility, including a planned preventative maintenance schedule.

Education, Training, and Experience Required:
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
- Mechanical and Electrical Skills (Acquired from Training or On the Job)
- Ammonia refrigeration experience
- Forklift Certification
Core Competencies Required:
- Read and understand blueprints, schematics (including electrical), wiring diagrams, technical manuals, etc.
- Working knowledge and skills in operating a variety of small hand tools and devices used in general mechanical maintenance operations.
- Possess expertise in ammonia, sewer, HVAC, and boiler systems.
- Ability to disassemble and reassemble complex mechanical assemblies.
- Mechanical ability to repair and maintain equipment, replace broken/worn parts.
- Apply CIP cleaning and maintenance techniques.
- Understand and apply GMP principles.
- English reading, writing, and speaking skills required to record information and complete work orders.
Physical Requirements:
- Lift weights up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
- Finger and Wrist Dexterity — The ability to make coordinated movements of the fingers and wrists of one or both hands to type and grasp objects.
- Near Vision — The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
- Assemble and disassemble production equipment.
- Repair and maintain food production equipment.
- Work in cold environments.
- Stand, walk, or crouch to reach awkward positions.
- Understand and apply GMP principles.
- English reading, writing, and speaking skills required to complete logs and other documentation.
