What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Rowing Coach position at Wayland-Weston Rowing Association?
Wayland Weston Crew is hiring for a Varsity Girls Assistant Coach starting Spring 2024- We are a high school rowing program located just outside of Boston, MA on Lake Cochituate in Wayland. The program has a history of success at both the regional and national level in both sweep and sculling events. We look for coaches that can contribute to our culture of camaraderie and sportsmanship, and who have strong leadership skills and the ability to foster a healthy balance between hard work and the joy of rowing. These positions entail working closely with both the other coaches and with athletes.
General Responsibilities:
- to create and maintain a safe environment for athletes
- to provide guidance to athletes for efficient and safe rowing movement patterns, on land and on the water
- to tend to equipment needs and equipment movement as is necessary to create an efficient and safe teaching environment
- to advance the purpose of the rowing program
- work with both novice and varsity athletes
- other duties as assigned
Skills:
- Demonstrated experience in the fundamental skills required to coach a competitive team
- Required experience in coaching rowing, with a focus on technique, fitness, and safety. Experience in both sweep and sculling is beneficial
- Ability and enthusiasm to support the training plan of the Head Coach
- Ability to appropriately rig different classes of boats for this age group.
- Experience in outboard launch handling and basic use/care (can train the right candidate)
- Enthusiasm for working with young student-athletes, and an understanding of their unique physiological and psychological needs
- An instinct for planning, paired with an ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in a broad range of real-time situations
- Excellent collaboration, interpersonal, organizational, and mentoring skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Additional position-specific responsibilities
- Work with the Varsity Girls Head Coach to guide a group of developing high school athletes in preparation for regional and national competition
- Practice schedule Spring and Fall: 3:45-6:15 M-F, plus Sat 8-10:30 or weekend regattas
- Two-season position (Spring and Fall) with potential for summer and winter coaching as well.
