HVAC Maintenance Mechanics in the Department of Public Services Roads Maintenance Division - under general supervision, perform skilled work in maintaining and repairing a variety of mechanical equipment, buildings and facilities They may assist other employees in higher classifications in performing more complicated and involved duties. Duties include minor repair and maintenance of pumps, blowers, heater, air conditioners, hot air furnaces, hot water and steam boilers, unit heaters and the piping and controls on each, replacing belts and filters, gas pump hoses and nozzles, pouring concrete, assisting in repairing and maintaining structural steel and fencing which may include welding and cutting. They may work with hand and power tools while performing a variety of maintenance work. They are responsible to maintain a clean and safe work environment.
Daily activities include inspecting equipment, structures or material, inspecting mechanical equipment to locate damage, defects or wear, testing fluid to identify contamination or other problems, and testing mechanical equipment to ensure proper function.
DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR JOB DUTIES
- Required Tasks
- Maintain fuel systems (change filters, hoses and handles).
- Maintain gates and fencing around yards.
- Weld and Fabricate- Operate cutting torches or welding equipment to cut or join metal parts.
- Dismantle machines, equipment, or devices to access and remove defective parts, using hoists, cranes, hand tools, or power tools.
- Diagnose mechanical problems and determine how to correct them, checking blueprints, repair manuals, or parts catalogs, as necessary.
- Repair machines, equipment, or structures, using tools such as hammers, hoists, saws, drills, wrenches, or equipment such as precision measuring instruments or electrical or electronic testing devices.
- Maintain or repair specialized equipment or machinery located in maintenance buildings and offices.
- Clean or lubricate shafts, bearings, gears, or other parts of machinery.
- Order parts, supplies, or equipment from catalogs or suppliers.
- Plan and lay out repair work, using diagrams, drawings, blueprints, maintenance manuals, or schematic diagrams.
- Perform general cleaning duties of buildings or properties.
- Maintain HVAC Systems (clean units, change filters).
- Maintain clean and safe work environment.
- Assist other tradesmen.
- Inspect, operate, or test machinery or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions.
- Perform routine maintenance, such as inspecting drives, motors, or belts, checking fluid levels, replacing filters, or doing other preventive maintenance actions.
- Adjust functional parts of devices or control instruments, using hand tools, levels, plumb bobs, or straightedges.
- Record type and cost of maintenance or repair work.
- Other related duties and special tasks as assigned.
Educational/Experience Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Two years full-time paid experience maintaining and repairing mechanical/HVAC equipment OR
- One year of the above experience AND one year vocational course in mechanics/HVAC or machine shop OR
- Three (3) years full-time paid experience as a HVAC/Maintenance Mechanic
- A valid State of Michigan Driver's License and an acceptable driving record (no more than 7 Points)
Salary : $61,644 - $78,904
