Purpose/Description

The Pump Station Mechanic will perform preventative maintenance and repair of all equipment at wastewater and storm water facilities including lift stations, interceptor sewers and combined sewerage overflow basins.

Required Tasks

  • Inspect, operate, or test machinery or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions.
  • Dismantle machines, equipment, or devices to access and remove defective parts, using hoists, cranes, hand tools, or power tools.
  • Perform routine maintenance, such as inspecting drives, motors, or belts, checking fluid levels, replacing filters, or doing other preventive maintenance actions.
  • Diagnose mechanical problems and determine how to correct them, checking blueprints, repair manuals, or parts catalogs, as necessary.
  • Repair machines, equipment, or structures, using tools such as hammers, hoists, saws, drills, wrenches, or equipment such as precision measuring instruments or electrical or electronic testing devices.
  • Maintain or repair specialized equipment or machinery located in stormwater and wastewater facilities.
  • Assemble, install, or repair wiring, electrical or electronic components, pipe systems, plumbing, machinery, or equipment.
  • Order parts, supplies, or equipment from catalogs or suppliers.
  • Plan and lay out repair work, using diagrams, drawings, blueprints, maintenance manuals, or schematic diagrams.
  • Record type and cost of maintenance or repair work.
  • Operate pumping stations and equipment during wet weather events.
  • Assist with confined space entry into tanks, wells, manholes and tunnels.
  • Collect water samples and maintain appropriate records.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

This examination is open only to employees of Wayne County who, at the time of application, have:

Educational/Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; AND
  • A valid State of Michigan Driver's License and an acceptable, safe driving record; AND
  • One (1) year vocational course in mechanic or machine shop OR
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience maintaining and repairing mechanical pump equipment. OR
  • Three (3) years of experience in a storm water or wastewater facility.
