WAYNE COUNTY JOB DESCRIPTION for
CENTRAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT

GENERAL WORK FUNCTIONS
Under general supervision, performs work in support of various programs in a variety of
departments for the County of Wayne. Serves as Mail/Deposit courier in the Mail Room under
Central Services Department. The Mail/Deposit Service Coordinator is responsible for providing
mail/bank deposits pickup and delivering for various county departments daily.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 The ability to be flexible is key to success in this position.
 Duties may include, but are not restricted to-

o Relaying messages as appropriate
o Inputting data into computer system
o General clerical duties
o Answering multiple questions concerning mail and bank bags.

 The Administrative Assistant serves as back-up for this position.
 Placing postage on mail for various county departments.
 Processes letters and other items for mailing.
 Includes courier runs to:

o Emergency Services
o Emergency Medical Services
o Health Department
o Social Services
o 4-H
o Cooperative Extension
o Soil/Water Conservation
o Sheriff’s Annex
o Borden Building

 Includes two bank runs per day for deposits to Truist
 Goes to Post Office twice daily and distributes mail appropriately.
 Checks courier box each morning and distributes appropriately.
 Keeps county vehicle serviced- oil change, rotate tires, etc.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with county personnel, vendors, and the
general public.

 Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in applying standards to a variety
of work situations.

 Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
 Ability to verify documents and forms for accuracy and completeness.
 General knowledge of standard office methods and procedures.
 Ability to use computers and programs including Word, Excel and file maintenance

programs.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 Photocopies documents as required.
 Working in various departments when needed and directed by Supervisor.
 Performs other related work as required.
 The employee in this position will be called upon to work in a variety of departments and

with a variety of programs. 

Ability to organize and effectively process and maintain files.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum:

 Must possess a Valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
 Graduation from high school.
 Equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required

knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Preferred:

 1 to 2 years of clerical experience.

MINIMUM STANDARDS REQUIRED
TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment, including
computers, calculators, copier/fax machines, two-way radios, keyboards, control knobs, switches etc. Requires the
ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible
amount of force constantly to move objects. Daily lifting of mail totes and bank bags. Daily driving of County vehicle
for pick-ups and deliveries. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Light Work
usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree.
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or
composite characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
Interpersonal Communications: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange
information. Includes receiving assignments and/or directions from supervisors.
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of reports, correspondence, forms, etc. Requires the ability to
prepare a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, minutes, etc., using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules
of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style. Must be able to speak to people with poise, voice control and confidence.
Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of
concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished
in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and
written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in Standard English.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide;
calculate decimals and percentages.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using automated
office equipment.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc.

Color Discrimination: Does not require the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must
be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.
Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means
of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to communicate via telephone.
