Job Summary :

Under general supervision, primary duty of Medical Laboratory Technician is to analyze body fluids (blood, urine, cervical / urethral swabs), and other substances, to assist the clinicians in determining the presence of disease or other abnormal conditions using both CLIA waived and Moderately Complex tests.

Other duties include processing and labeling of specimens, cleaning equipment; prepare solutions following standard formulas and procedures. Keep records of tests performed, write reports on test results, and keep records of tests sent out to other laboratories. Perform quality controls and calibrate laboratory equipment against standards, under the supervision of the clinic manager.

Job Description :

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Greet and escort patients to laboratory; verify patients' information
  • Explain procedures to patients
  • Assist patients in and out of chairs
  • Obtain / draw biological samples according to established standards and as ordered by physicians
  • Label all specimen containers with appropriate information
  • Spin test tubes in centrifuges as appropriate
  • Store / secure specimens according to testing requirements and established standards (i.e. refrigerate, freeze)
  • Record and enter notes and test results in the electronic medical record; notify physicians of concerns / unusual results, etc.
  • Assist patients with scheduling and follow-up appointments
  • Answer telephone calls
  • Clean / sterlize equipment and laboratory / work areas as required
  • Repair equipment as needed
  • Stock laboratory / work areas and / or order supplies
  • Establish and maintain productive working relationships with people inside and outside the department and / or practice

Education and / or Experience :

  • Associate's degree in chemical, physical, biological science or Medical Laboratory Technology
  • Bachelor's degree in chemical, physical, biological science or Medical Laboratory Technology preferred
  • 1-3 years laboratory experience
  • Patient care experience
  • Knowledge of general laboratory operations and clinical laboratory equipment and instruments
  • Skills and Abilities Required :

  • Ability to use a variety of laboratory equipment and instruments including microscopes, centrifuges, vacutainer test tubes, syringes
  • Good written and verbal communication skills to convey and receive information effectively (face-to-face, telephone and electronic)
  • Good analytical and judgment skills
  • Ability to use computer software programs and systems
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding patients, personnel and / or financial data
  • Excellent organizational skills to work independently, prioritize, handle multiple tasks and manage time
  • Safety Requirements :

  • Compliance with departmental Health and Safety policies and procedures
  • Mandatory TB test annually (based on Department guidelines)

  • Operate in a hospital, medical center or clinic setting
  • Routinely use clinical laboratory equipment and supplies
  • Routinely use standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers and fax machines
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
  • Work Schedule :

  • 40-hour workweek
  • Hours and days to be determined by the business needs of the department
  • May require on-call duty and the ability to work outside of scheduled work hours when the need arises
