Literacy Consultant (Job ID: 29140)
IN THIS ROLE:
Support local districts in curriculum development, implementation, and assessment in literacy based on the Michigan Career and College Readiness Standards and research-based instructional frameworks.
- Plan, develop, and deliver professional learning opportunities and resources for Wayne County districts and educators around literacy initiatives, as well as the implementation of a systematic instructional coaching model based on professional learning standards and relevant literacy research.
- Provide consultant and leadership services to Wayne County districts and schools in literacy curriculum, instruction, and assessment; school organizational development; school improvement and professional learning beginning in early childhood through secondary.
- Plan and deliver professional learning opportunities, consulting, and resources for Wayne County districts and educators, which includes grant initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Master’s Degree required
- Major/Minor English Language Arts or Reading Endorsement preferred
- Michigan Teacher’s or School Administrator Certificate required
Experience
- Minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience that includes literacy required
- Consultant or coaching experience in literacy preferred
Required Skills and Training:
- Demonstrated skill in providing high-quality literacy instruction within K-3 classrooms preferred
- Demonstrated skill in the design and implementation of successful strategies for professional development and curriculum planning/development in literacy-based upon current national standards required
- Demonstrated experience in leadership, teaching, planning, evaluation, and curriculum development required
- Demonstrated skills in consultation, training, group facilitation, and process required
- Demonstrated ability to integrate emerging forms of technology into professional activities and public presentations required
- Demonstrated skill in proposal development and organization and budget management preferred
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills required
- Demonstrated skill working with diverse populations required
- Proficiency in using the Microsoft Windows desktop operating system and Windows-based software required
COMPENSATION: WCSSF Salary Schedule H, 11-Month ($72,946 - $110,401) and a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including health/dental/vision/life and long-term disability insurance. 19 paid holidays, generous time off, and Membership in the Michigan Public Schools Employee Retirement System. The position is represented by Wayne County Salaried Staff Federation Local 4479 (WCSSF). SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THIS ROLE:
- Provide consulting and coordinate activities related to literacy curriculum, instruction, assessment, and coaching frameworks and principles.
- Know and be able to apply current research and effective practices of curriculum, pedagogy, and adult learning practices in the area of literacy.
- Support educators in using data effectively to drive instructional practice and change, as well as to analyze the effectiveness of curriculum frameworks and resources and the implementation of a multi-tiered system of supports.
- Facilitate educator teams engaged in analyzing multiple data sources, including student work, and reflecting on practice toward the goal of improving student outcomes.
- Build collaboration and networks of innovative and successful instructional strategies and resources.
- Model the principles of continuous learning, problem-solving, and collaboration, as well as the ability to learn new technologies and instructional practices on an ongoing basis.
- Engage in professional study with district and school-level leaders and coaching teams, which involves modeling instructional practices, developing coaching dispositions, and engaging in instructional rounds and debriefing sessions.
- Provide consulting, professional learning, and relevant resources to Wayne County literacy leaders.
- Plan, develop, support, and deliver professional learning activities for Early Childhood Specialists and program staff working with young children in Wayne County around developmentally appropriate early literacy practices.
- Act as the Wayne RESA liaison to the Michigan Department of Education related to literacy and coaching initiatives.
- Understand and support districts in the implementation of state legislation and policy as they relate to literacy and assessment initiatives.
- Organize, plan, and facilitate professional learning, training programs, and conferences for local districts in a variety of locations.
- Integrate the use of technology into literacy instruction and programs.
- Participate in local district needs assessments and Educational Services planning.
- Work in collaboration with other Wayne RESA staff to ensure client needs are met in the most efficient and effective manner.
- Collaborate as an active team member in Wayne RESA projects as assigned, which includes attending and contributing to department and team meetings and planning sessions.
- Use professional judgment and act effectively to carry out the functions of this position within the direction provided by Wayne RESA’s mission and goals and the Educational Services’ goals and objectives.
