Job Description
TITLE: F-021 - Head Custodian
Education And Experience Required
JOB GOAL: Under supervision of the Custodial Supervisor, and in consultation with the School Principal, the Head Custodian completes daily custodial duties and responsibilities for district facilities. All head custodians are expected to provide a healthy, safe and efficiently operated school environment.
Performance Responsibilities
Opens the building each day. Checks the facility to ensure heating or cooling systems are functioning properly. Inspects the building exterior for possible unauthorized entrance and/or vandalism. Dust mops halls and clean entrance mats throughout the day. Picks up paper and other debris from inside the building, parking areas, and school grounds. Sweeps entranceways. Makes minor repairs, and replaces light bulbs as required. Keeps mechanical rooms, electrical rooms, boiler rooms and custodial closets clean, neat and organized. Cleans up after sick students. Assists in setting up and moving furniture and equipment for daily operations, summer cleaning and special events. Assists in receiving and moving deliveries of storeroom materials. Performs duties in the cafeteria as directed. Takes care of emergencies and any work as directed by the Building Principal or Administrator. Cleans and restocks restrooms throughout the day.
Other Duties
Perform any duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment, as assigned by the Director of Facilities Management, or designee, and not otherwise prohibited by law or regulation.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Salary and work year to be determined by the Board of Education. This position is part of the Wayne Custodial-Maintenance Association. Stipend allowances as per the Director of Facilities Management.
ANNUAL EVALUATION
Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the Board's policy on the evaluation of non-certificated staff.

- Five years of skilled custodial experience is preferred.
- Must possess and maintain a valid New Jersey driver's license and a satisfactory driving record

- Arranges furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities and events.
- Assembles furniture and equipment for the purpose of completing tasks in a timely and efficient manner.
- Cleans assigned school facilities (e.g. classrooms, offices, gym, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, patios, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment and directs assigned custodial staff to accomplish the same.
- Evaluates situations (e.g. involving staff, students, parents, the public, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Facilitates meetings (e.g. safety, in-service, etc.) for the purpose of receiving/conveying information on new and/or improved procedures.
- Inspects school facilities and/or equipment (e.g. grounds, buildings, lighting, fire suppression equipment, playgrounds,etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the site is suitable for safe operations, maintained in an attractive and clean condition, and/or identifying necessary repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.
- Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment (e.g. cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuum, mops, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items required to properly maintain facilities.
- Oversees assigned custodial staff (e.g. assigning tasks and workload, training, reviewing work, providing recommendations for improvement, etc.) for the purpose of providing guidance and direction and meeting operational requirements.
- Prepares facility for daily operations (e.g. opening gates, building access doors, disarming security systems, raising flag, crosswalk signs, minor repairs, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring school facilities are operational and safe.
- Prepares grounds around immediate school building for the purpose of providing adequate, attractive and safe areas for students, staff and visitors.
- Submits work orders for the purpose of requesting supplies and/or equipment, maintenance and/or grounds keeping support and services. Monitors status of all work orders for assigned building.
- Receives supplies for the purpose of verifying quality/quantity of items. Makes minor repairs to furniture, equipment and fixtures (e.g. plumbing, electrical, sheet rock, tile, lockers, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that items are available and in safe working condition.
- Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, injured and ill students, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning educational environment.
- Secures facilities and grounds for the purpose of minimizing property damage, equipment loss and potential liability to organization.
