Job Summary
The Clinical Laboratory Assistant collects blood from patients, performs venipuncture or capillary puncture using approved techniques, instructs patients in urine specimen collection, and processes specimens for delivery to the laboratory.
Responsibilities:
- Greet and interact with patients in a professional manner.
- Perform patient preparation and specimen collection using approved techniques.
- Collect and process urine drug screens.
- Receive orders from providers and enter them into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Verify correct test and patient identity.
- Collect and label specimens accurately, recording date and time according to established procedures.
- Prepare specimens for transport and deliver to the correct technical area in a timely manner.
- Receive and distribute test results.
- Operate HIS, LIS, and EPIC technology proficiently.
- Provide information or assistance to teammates regarding patients with difficulties.
- Maintain a safe environment for self and teammates, applying knowledge of universal precautions and infection control principles.
- Participate in continuing education and in-service programs to meet regulatory and job requirements.
- Actively participate in staff meetings and quality/performance improvement activities.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required; higher education preferred.
- Certification from an accredited agency (NPA, ASCP, ASCP, NHA, National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel) required.
- At least 1 year of experience as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant.
- Proficient in basic laboratory procedures and terminology.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Ability to perform detailed work, work with frequent interruptions, multi-task, and problem solve.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
- Proficient with LIS, HIS, and MS Office software.
- Valid NC Driver's License not required; if driving a Wayne UNC vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR approved by Risk Management.
