Job Goal:
This employee is responsible for assisting the classroom teachers in the implementation of program's established criteria.
ABOUT WAYSIDE SCHOOLS: Wayside Schools is an open-enrollment, tuition-free Pre-K3-12th grade public charter school network that provides over 2,200 scholars across its four South Austin campuses with a rigorous International Baccalaureate education. Since 2012, Wayside schools has striven to empower historically underserved scholars, providing them with the instructional experiences, academics skills, intellectual habits and social and emotional competencies needed to become graduates from four-year colleges and universities, providing them with the access and opportunities they need to narrate their own futures and positively impact and empower the families and communities to which they belong.
Qualifications/Education/Certification:
  • Bachelor’s Degree, Associate’s Degree, and/or SPED Paraprofessional Certificate
  • Bilingual Spanish Speaker required
Skill Requirements:
  • Ability to work with individuals and small groups of children.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with all employees.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain required program records.
  • Ability to assist supervising instructional staff in the preparation and/or organization of materials.
  • Meet all State and Federal requirements for the position, regarding staff qualifications.
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Assisting the Teacher in preparing instructional materials to be used in the program.
  • Assisting in arranging the learning environment, including assembling and putting materials on the bulletin board and arranging center areas.
  • Working with assigned children under the teacher's direction.
  • Administering and scoring appropriate screenings and assessments required by the program.
  • Performing other duties as assigned or required by the program.
  • Working with individual student or small groups as assigned by the teacher.
  • Establishing and maintaining high standards of student behavior consistent with district and school policies.
  • Assisting students with daily activities such as during mealtimes, dressing and toileting.
  • Attending enrichment classes with students such as art, physical education, Spanish and music as needed.
  • Attending school-wide assemblies or special programs as needed.
  • Taking all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, materials, equipment, and facilities.
  • Supervising the students throughout the day.
  • Completing record keeping tasks assigned by the teacher.
  • Riding the school bus as needed to monitor and assist with the safe transportation of assigned children.
  • Performing other duties as assigned
  • Participating in Program In-service Activities.

Physical Effort and Work Environment:
  • Services are generally provided within a standard classroom environment.
  • Some movement throughout the classroom is generally necessary to facilitate learning (e.g., standing, walking, stooping, bending, sitting, and/or kneeling).
  • Special Education staff may also be required to pick up students, restrain students as needed, and spend large quantities of time on the floor sitting, squatting, and/or kneeling.
  • Light lifting of materials and other objects associated with a classroom environment is required (e.g., books, teaching aids, up to approximately 20 – 40 lbs.).
  • Lifting of students to help with dressing or toileting as needed.
  • Field trips may be made.
  • Candidate should be willing to contribute directly or indirectly to the development of children both inside and outside the classroom, which may include working hours in addition to the regular school day.
  • This position may involve rare exposure to blood or body fluids.
  • Regular attendance is required for this position.
