Job Summary: The Safety Lane Attendant is responsible for inspecting tractors and trailers for safety compliance, proper mechanical condition and emergency roadside equipment before operations begin.
Essential Job Functions:
Perform general inspections on tractor and trailer to include service brakes, trailer brake connections, parking (hand) brake, steering mechanism, lighting devices, reflectors, tires, horn, windshield wipers, mirrors, coupling devices, wheels, rims and emergency equipment
Look for any additional repairs that need to be performed and inspect trucks for any physical damage
Complete any needed minor repairs such as lighting or wipers in the safety lane
Report major discrepancies to the maintenance department for repairs
Maintain, clean and orderly safety lane area
Work independently in a fast-paced environment that may require long hours, including nights and weekends
Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines while performing duties, including the use of protective equipment and the safe handling of chemicals to ensure a safe working environment
In applicable locations, safely operate machinery and equipment such as a forklift and terminal tractor
Other related duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Required:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and submit to the company random drug and alcohol program
Valid Driver’s license in state of residency with acceptable driving record
Ability to read labels, safety warnings, and guidelines
Ability to operate and maintain various vehicles and equipment
Ability to work outside in inclement weather and in varying environmental conditions
Basic understanding of safety protocols and practices
Ability to work any schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays
Preferred:
Experience in construction, mechanical, or transportation industry

Physical Demands: Must possess mobility to work in a outdoors setting and use standard office equipment including a computer; operate a motor vehicle and to visit various locations; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone. This is mostly a general laborer classification, standing in outdoor work areas and walking between terminals, maintenance shops and Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) operating areas for long periods must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by the job include clear and accurate vision, with or without corrective lenses, for tasks such as reading gauges, inspecting equipment, and identifying potential contaminants. Hearing abilities adequate to respond to auditory signals, alarms, and communicate with team members.
Communication: Ability to speak with internal customers to determine the nature of the problem or to explain the work performed. Ability to discuss work with other technicians or supervisors. Ability to make self understood as well as be able to understand what others are saying.
Driving Skills: Proficient driving skills, including the ability to maneuver and operate the terminal tractor safely in tight spaces and have the ability to lift and carry materials, tools, or equipment associated with coupling and decoupling trailers.
Work Environment: The duties of this job are performed in both an office environment, a CMV Terminal environment, and outdoors, thereby experiencing some minor to moderate level of noise due to office/CMV equipment. Must have a working knowledge of and physically utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) to limit or prevent occasional exposure to various severe climate conditions, lighting conditions, fumes, dust, odors, oil/grease, and gasses.
