Overview: We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Personal Support Direct Support Professional to assist an individual with an intellectual disability. The individual enjoys their job and values their time off, making this support role essential in helping them engage in leisure activities and community involvement.
Location: Burtonsville, MD
Key Responsibilities:
Community Engagement:
- Accompany on outings for shopping, banking, grocery shopping, and leisure activities such as bowling and swimming, ensuring they have a fulfilling and active lifestyle.
Activity Participation:
- Support in their arts and crafts projects and during their exercise program, providing encouragement and assistance as needed to promote enjoyment and participation.
Transportation Assistance:
- Provide transportation to and from various activities, ensuring the individual feels comfortable and safe during travel.
Social Interaction:
- Facilitate social opportunities during outings to enhance interactions with peers and community members, promoting social skills and confidence.
Future Support Coordination:
- While the individual does not currently require assistance at home, maintain open communication regarding their future needs and be prepared to adapt support, as necessary.
Candidate Qualities:
- Previous experience in direct support, particularly with individuals who have intellectual disabilities, is preferred.
- Understanding of the challenges associated with chronic pain and the ability to provide support that accommodates physical limitations.
- Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate and foster a supportive environment.
- Excellent listening and observational skills to understand the individual’s needs and preferences.
- Ability to plan and engage in a variety of activities that align with the individual’s interests, such as arts, crafts, and exercise.
- Flexibility and adaptability to adjust plans based on the individual’s energy levels and comfort.
Required Qualifications:
- Fully Vaccinated against COVID-19
- High School Diploma
- Valid Driver’s License
- Possess a strong service orientation, including active listening, critical thinking skills, and close monitoring of individuals supported.
- Comfortable in an environment where individuals supported may not be able to perform essential life duties.
- Ability to work professionally and discretely with confidential information.
- High level of personal and professional integrity.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in a verbal and written manner.
- Demonstrates sensitivity to the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.
- Ability to use computer applications to fulfill job duties, including the use of individual documentation system, Microsoft Word, assigned payroll systems, LTSS (as assigned) and vehicle inspection reporting system
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged standing, leaning, walking, bending, and lifting periods.
- Prolonged periods are sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to operate durable medical equipment.
- Ability to push a wheelchair and occupant with combined weight up to 200 pounds, on occasion.
- Ability to detect unsafe situations by sight or sound and react quickly to intervene.
- Must maintain reliable transportation to ensure the ability to travel to various sites and meetings in the community.
