Purpose Statement
The job of Custodial Intern was established for the purpose/s of creating an attractive, sanitary and safe environment for students, staff and the public at various school site within the district ; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; and minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure.
Essential Functions
- Arranges furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities and special events.
- Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities. Cleans assigned school facilities (e.g. classrooms, offices, restrooms, grounds, snow removal, graffiti, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
- Distributes a variety of items (e.g. supplies, mail, packages, furniture, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring materials are received by the appropriate parties.
- Evaluates a large variety of indoor custodial equipment failures for the purpose of researching and purchasing repair parts.
- Inspects school facilities for the purpose of ensuring that the site meets district standards for safety and cleanliness, and/or identifying vandalism, equipment breakage, weather damage, etc.
- Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g. cleaning solutions, labels/stores chemicals, paper products, vacuum, mops, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items required to properly maintain facilities.
- Monitors students for the purpose of ensuring a safe and positive school environment and/or supervising student workers. Organizes And Supervises project work for the purpose of assisting custodians and maintenance department employees to meet deadlines.
- Performs maintenance and repairs (e.g. replace ballasts, outlets, locks, change light bulbs, replace washers, oil doors, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safe and efficient use of facilities.
- Performs summer maintenance (e.g. strips/waxes floors, moves furniture, painting, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the site is ready for the coming school year.
- Repairs furniture and equipment (e.g. sharpening mower blades, changing oil, filters, replacing cords, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that items are available and in safe working condition.
- Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, injured and ill students, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning educational environment.
- Secures facilities and grounds for the purpose of minimizing property damage, equipment loss and potential liability.
- Supports assigned site administrators (e.g. monitor students, after-hours school, community functions, reports smoking in halls, assists police, etc.) for the purpose of assisting them in their work activities.
- Trains individual custodians for the purpose of using shared equipment such as aerial work platforms.
- Transports various items (e.g. tools, equipment, supplies, etc.)
Job Requirements/Minimum Qualifications (Skills, Knowledge and Abilities):
- Must be able to operate equipment used in industrial maintenance; adhering to safety practices; and handling hazardous materials; operating standard office equipment including utilizing pertinent software applications may be required.
- Must have knowledge of methods of industrial cleaning; and safety practices and procedures.
- Must be able to communicate with diverse groups; adapting to changing work priorities; meeting deadlines and schedules; and working as part of a team.
- Experience: Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is desired.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
