Purpose Statement
The job of High School Head Custodian was established for the purpose/s of maintaining an attractive, sanitary and safe facility for students, staff and public; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure; ensuring that assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner and overseeing and supporting assigned Assistant Head Custodian and part-time custodians in the performance of their assignments.
Essential Functions
- Arranges and supervises the arrangement of furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for assemblies, lunchroom, meetings, classroom activities, and special events.
- Chairs risk management committee and serves on other school committees as may be required for the purpose of conveying information and/or receiving information.
- Cleans and supervises the cleaning of the school facilities (e.g. classrooms, offices, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, grounds, snow removal, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
- Coordinates scheduled special events, meetings, community functions, etc. (e.g. records hours facility used, custodial hours required, equipment used, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of facilities and/or equipment and providing information required for billing.
- Delivers various items (e.g. supplies, mail, packages, furniture, etc.) for the purpose of distributing materials to the appropriate parties.
- Directs assistant head custodian, part-time custodial personnel and substitute staff for the purpose of maximizing the efficiency of the work force, assisting in performance evaluations, and meeting shift requirements.
- Inspects school facilities for the purpose of ensuring that the site is suitable for safe operations, maintained in an attractive and clean condition, and performing necessary minor repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc. and/or referring to other district personnel for resolution.
- Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g. cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuums, mops, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items required to properly maintain facilities.
- Performs fire drills for the purpose of ensuring that staff and students are familiar with emergency procedures.
- Prepares documentation (e.g. work schedules, work orders, requisitions, budget requests, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
- Prepares facility for daily operations (e.g. opening gates, building access doors, disarming security systems, heaters, repairs, snow removal, programs bell systems, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring school facilities are operational and safe for occupancy.
- Repairs furniture, doors, hangs blackboards, emergency repairs, replace filters, ceiling, walls, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the safe and efficient utilization of space.
- Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns, including after hours (e.g. facility damage, injured and ill students, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning educational environment.
- Trains assigned custodial personnel and other school personnel (e.g. MSDS, body fluids, risk management issues, blood born pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, etc.) for the purpose of providing orientation for new employees, developing professional skills, and safety awareness.

- Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Must be able to operate equipment used in industrial cleaning/maintenance; adhering to safety practices; managing personnel; handling hazardous materials; planning and managing projects; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
- Must have knowledge of methods of industrial cleaning; hazardous substance management and control MSDS, blood borne pathogen, asbestos, chemicals, etc.; labor legislation; first aid and CPR; and safety practices and procedures.
- Must be able to adapt to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working as part of a team; and working with constant and sustained interruptions.
Experience: Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
