Job Summary/Basic Function
Academic advising is an educational process that, by intention and design, facilitates students’ understanding of the meaning and purpose of higher education and fosters their intellectual and personal development toward academic success and lifelong learning (NACADA, 2004). The College of Science (COS) Academic Advisor will confer with students interested in COS programs & degrees in order to increase understanding of the purpose, scope, and demands of higher education; and will serve as a liaison between students, the advising office, and other student campus resources. This position will manage learning communities in the College of Science. This position reports to the COS Dean, and represents COS on campus and within the community.
- This position will support advising initiatives and events related to student retention, engagement, and recruitment.
- Some travel to junior colleges and secondary schools for advisement & recruitment purposes will be required
- Periodic evening and weekend work will be required
Required Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree
- One year full-time college employment experience, preferably in enrollment services (academic advisement, registration, admissions, or financial aid), student services or the equivalent
- Experience with computer applications
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred:
- Spanish-speaking
- Willingness to learn and follow university, college, and department policies
- Commitment to work with colleagues and supervisor to build a work schedule that complements others’ schedules in order to ensure sufficient advising center coverage
- Ability to think critically and make appropriate judgment calls
- Ability to manage a variety of responsibilities in an organized, professional manner
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
