Position Summary

The Towing Master is the leader of an entire vessel or fleet of vessels that provide(s) tug services to Weeks Marine’s Dredging, Marine Construction, Stevedoring and Heavy Lift Operations divisions. The Tug Master is responsible for the safety and activities of all employees, customers, contractors, and persons aboard the vessel.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

  • Ensuring person and vessel safety, seaworthiness, and security.
  • Ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Being an environmental steward.
  • Working as directed by the Port Captain, Marine Superintendents and/or others as assigned.
  • Conducting safety meetings and complete start card, JSA and all other required documentation regarding same.
  • Completing required TSMS forms.
  • Performing various vessel maneuvers safely.
  • Leading vessel operational efficiency, cargo, navigation, and crew management endeavors.
  • Providing daily production data to division management.
  • Enforcing USCG rules and regulations.
  • Setting and achieving safety, operational, and environmental goals for the vessel.
  • Being ultimately responsible for all persons on board during all operations.
  • Conducts fair business dealings and is consistently professional and ethical in all business dealings.
  • Aligning, persuading, motivating and/or mentoring and excels at verbal and written communication.
  • Delegates and ensures satisfactory and safe completion of each task while following all safety policies and procedures while managing the performance of teams and individuals.
  • Ensures the submission of accurate payroll information for crew members.
  • Directs all activities of the vessel and is responsible for overall safety operation, maintenance, manning, and production.
  • Manages and reviews employee and vessel performance.
  • Training and development of all crew members, including when corrective and preventative actions are required.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

Must possess at least five (5) years of experience operating tugboats.
Must have Tugboat experience on marine construction and/or dredging projects.
This position may also require travel: Local throughout the US, including Hawaii and Southern America as needed.
Security Clearance or Work Authorization
Must pass a post-offer physical exam and background check, as well as drug screen(s).
Certificates and/or Licenses (such as Mariner/Non-Mariner)
Valid Merchant Mariner’s Credentials.
A (minimum) 100-ton Master Near Coastal License with a Towing Endorsement (Oceans preferred.
Valid certifications required to operate a towing vessel (VSO, radar).
Valid TWIC card (provide expiration date).
Valid Driver’s License.
Must have at 5 least years’ experience with vessels’, navigation, weather, vessel operations, and all crew positions.
Must have a Master of Towing Vessels and extensive technical knowledge of:

  • USCG Regulations.
  • Operating towing vessels in the marine construction industry.
  • Captain endorsements for vessels 100 GRT (or greater) navigable in any or all the following waters:
  • Near Coastal.
  • Western Rivers; and/or
  • Inland Waters.

  • Supervises the deck and engine departments, coordinates daily operations while maintaining appropriate levels of crew, supplies, and equipment. The Master/1st Captain allocates resources appropriately to accomplish goals.
  • Must have basic knowledge of computer skills.
  • Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions and communicate effectively with craft workers under his/her supervision and management/supervision.
  • Able to work various schedules as required by the boats they are on.
  • Able to live/work on a vessel
  • Able to work Frequent overtime, if applicable
  • Work 42 - 84 hours per week.
  • Professional areas of specialty and expertise include:
  • Vessels and navigation.
  • Working knowledge of USCG Code of Federal Regulations, - Subchapter M, internal and external vessel audits, Sinex Operations maintenance, and repair.

Requirements

  • Must safely and compliantly navigate vessels, as well as around vessels, objects, and project sites, which may include climbing, kneeling, crawling, stooping and/or scaling large heights.
  • Must satisfy the requirements of a post-offer, pre-placement physical examination and drug test.
  • Must meet specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must work well under pressure and think creatively and calmly in highly fluid situations and under intense schedules and deadlines
  • Must use initiative to complete tasks independently.
  • Must be able to work in all weather and seasonal conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
  • Must be able to tolerate rough seas, vibrations, heat, harsh weather conditions, confined spaces, and high noise levels.
  • Work will frequently require individuals to push, pull, bend or stand for long periods of time, and climb ladders.
  • Must be able to lift or carry miscellaneous equipment, supplies and parts up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Ability to pass pre-access drug and alcohol testing, fit for duty medical and background
    check
