BASIC FUNCTION:
Assist teachers in the instruction, supervision and care of students who are deaf and hard of hearing. Works specifically with deaf and hard of hearing students. Exhibits and models fluent sign language skills and supports student success. Abides by guidelines established for teacher associates of the district. This position requires continuous use of independent judgment. The essential functions as shown below represent only the key areas of responsibility; specific position requirements will vary depending on the needs of the building assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Assist classroom teacher with educational activities
2. Provide positive, clear sign language modeling during instructional activities
3. Assist in the implementation and monitoring of students’ Individual Educational Plan (IEP)
4. Follow behavior management plans for individual students or classroom, when applicable
5. Assist in implementing instructional programs and ensuring the use of American Sign Language and English is modeled to students at all times
6. Prepare and organize instructional materials and equipment with teacher guidance
7. Perform personal care duties for students as needed, when needed
8. Assist in maintaining a safe and orderly instructional environment
9. Facilitate language and literacy development in both ASL and English

3. Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees.
4. Assist with other duties as may be assigned.
HIRING SPECIFICATIONS:
Required:
- High School Diploma, G.E.D, or HiSET.
- Para Educator Certification, CDA, or Associate Degree.
- Experience with working with deaf and hard of hearing children
- Fluent in American Sign Language
Desired:
- Successful work or volunteer experience with deaf population.
- Supervisory experience with school-aged children.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Strong inter-personal skills with a proven record of building rapport with culturally diverse students
- Competency working in a culturally diverse environment or the willingness to acquire these skills.
