Job Summary:
The Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselor is responsible for providing clinical services to individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. This role involves conducting assessments, developing individualized treatment plans, and delivering counseling services in both individual and group settings. The counselor will document client progress, ensure proper case management, and collaborate with other clinical team members to provide comprehensive care. The SUD Counselor reports directly to the Director of Clinical Services and works to support clients in achieving their recovery goals while maintaining accurate and up-to-date client records.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary contact for client progress, ensuring issues are addressed promptly and effectively, while collaborating with the Program Manager (PM), Parole Agent Liaison, and other stakeholders.
- Communicate effectively with the Counseling Supervisor and Parole Agent Liaison about any issues affecting the program or treatment plans.
- Conduct comprehensive assessments for each paroleeparticipant, evaluating their physical, emotional, social, and mental health needs, as well as substance use patterns and treatment needs.
- Develop individualized goals and treatment plans in collaboration with clients, supporting their recovery journey and posttreatment transition, including aftercare services.
- Maintain detailed, uptodate client records in our CaseTrack system, ensuring accurate documentation of all services and interventions provided.
- Build and maintain a network of relationships with social service agencies and other programs to ensure holistic support for clients.
- Facilitate both individual and small group counseling sessions, and contribute to large group sessions, creating an inclusive and supportive therapeutic environment.
- Lead workshops focusing on essential life skills, such as relapse prevention, money management, and selfhelp strategies, tailored to the needs of each client.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- The ability to stand, sit, walk, and move between locations as required, including occasional stair climbing, stooping, bending, and lifting (up to 25 lbs.).
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to hear, see, and articulate clearly, ensuring effective interaction with clients and colleagues.
- Competence with office technology and computer systems, including the ability to efficiently operate Case Track software and other office equipment.
- Ability to read, analyze, and understand complex documents, requiring sustained attention to detail and focus.
- Capability to work independently or as part of a team in a fastpaced, dynamic environment, handling multiple tasks and shifting priorities effectively.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working with criminal justice populations in social services.
- Certification as a CADC (Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor) from the California Certification Board of Alcohol and Drug Counselors is required.
- A bachelor’s degree in human services is preferred, with relevant experience considered in lieu of formal education.
- Experience in substance abuse, mental health, and dual diagnosis treatment, with a preference for work with homeless or lowincome individuals.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a compassionate, empathetic approach to client needs.
- Strong computer literacy and proficiency in managing client data through specialized software.
- Ability to thrive in a highenergy environment, manage competing priorities, and meet deadlines while maintaining a high standard of care.
- A professional demeanor when interacting with colleagues, clients, and external service providers.
