Job Summary / Responsibilities:
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Welding Engineer to join our fabrication team. The ideal candidate will play a key role in designing, planning, and implementing welding processes for our fabrication shop. The Welding Engineer will work closely with the production and quality control teams to ensure that all welding operations are performed efficiently, safely, and meet high-quality standards. This position is essential for improving productivity, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and driving innovation in welding techniques.
Other Duties / Expectations:
Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS):
- Create, modify, and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) to ensure welding processes meet industry standards, customer specifications, and project requirements.
- Develop and review Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) and ensure they comply with all applicable codes (e.g., ASME, AWS).
- Optimize welding methods (MIG, TIG, Stick, Flux Core, etc.) to improve quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQ):
- Develop and manage welder qualification programs to ensure all welders are trained, certified, and proficient in welding procedures.
- Monitor welder performance and conduct evaluations to ensure compliance with welding procedures.
Quality Assurance & Control:
- Work closely with the Quality Control department to develop and enforce quality control plans for welding, including visual and non-destructive testing (NDT) methods.
- Troubleshoot and resolve welding-related issues, such as defects, distortions, and material inconsistencies, during production.
- Work closely with the quality team to ensure that all welding processes adhere to the required codes, standards (e.g., AWS, ASME), and customer specifications. (Audits)
Continuous Improvement:
- Lead process improvement initiatives to increase welding productivity, reduce costs, and minimize material waste.
- Monitor and evaluate welding trends and advancements to ensure the company remains at the forefront of welding technologies and practices.
Equipment and Maintenance:
- Collaborate with maintenance teams to ensure welding machines and equipment are properly maintained and functioning optimally.
- Maintain Equipment Calibration Program as per WeldFit Procedure.
Production Support:
- Provide technical support to the production team by troubleshooting welding issues and recommending corrective actions.
- Collaborate with the engineering team to ensure weld design is compatible with fabrication methods and materials.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including design engineers, production staff, and project managers to ensure seamless integration of welding processes in production workflows.
Research & Development:
- Stay up to date with the latest advanced welding technologies, techniques, and equipment.
- Lead the development of innovative solutions to meet the evolving needs of the fabrication industry, including cost reduction, productivity improvement, and welding automation.
Training & Mentorship:
- Provide training and mentorship to welders, welding technicians, and junior engineers on welding techniques, procedures, and safety protocols.
- Conduct internal welding seminars and workshops to enhance the team's knowledge and skills.
Customer Liaison:
- Assist in customer inspections, audits, or reviews as required.
- Communicate welding-related quality issues to internal and external stakeholders.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Develop and maintain accurate welding procedure specifications (WPS), procedure qualification records (PQR), and welder performance qualifications (WPQ).
- Provide regular reports on welding process performance, defect analysis, and process improvements to management.
Qualifications
Experience Levels:
- Extensive Knowledge of welding codes (e.g., AWS, ASME, ISO 9001).
- Extensive knowledge of welding techniques, processes (MIG, TIG, Stick, etc.), and materials.
- Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing welding procedures, performing process optimization, and ensuring quality control in a production environment.
- Familiarity with Welding Management software (e.g., WeldTrace, ProWrite, C-SPEC, TWI etc.)
- Experience with weld quality analysis and problem-solving.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work in a fabrication environment, with exposure to welding equipment, high temperatures, and heavy materials.
- Ability to stand, walk, and lift up to 50 lbs. for extended periods.
- Comfort with wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, safety glasses, and welding helmets when required.
Education/Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field, or equivalent work experience.
- Master’s degree or professional certification (e.g., Certified Welding Engineer) is a plus.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in welding engineering or a related technical role in a fabrication or manufacturing environment.
- Familiarity with ISO 9001 or other quality management systems.
Required Skills:
- Deep understanding of welding codes and standards (e.g., AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX, API 1104)
- Experience with welding-related non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, such as ultrasonic testing, X-ray inspection, and visual inspections.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot welding-related issues effectively.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting welding drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with production teams and customers.
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Ability to work well under pressure while maintaining a high level of attention to detail.
