The Power Systems Technician is accountable for monitoring the transmission and distribution of electricity into the Town’s substations and for performing switching in the substations and at the customer switching locations to minimize problems with the distribution of electricity to the Town’s customers. The Power Systems Technician also serves as a liaison between the Municipal Light Plant (“MLP”) and Town residents. Under the supervision of the Supervisory Electrical Engineer, the Power Systems Technician is responsible for providing back-up service for meter reading and DIG SAFE mark-outs in Wellesley and meeting with electric customers, contractors, and other Town Departments.
Principal activities include :
- Monitoring loads on transmission lines and distribution circuits in the MLP owned substations and for problems on those circuits.
- Working with Eversource and MLP personnel to isolate circuits and follow standard operating procedures to allow work to be safely performed on the transmission and distribution lines.
- Under supervision, opening and closing power circuit breakers in the three (3) MLP owned substations or the five (5) customer owned switching locations, either manually or by SCADA.
- Coordinating with Eversource and MLP personnel to ensure proper tagging procedures are followed.
- Responding to requests to open circuits during emergencies made by the Police or Fire Departments in accordance with established policies.
- Interfacing with the computer-based SCADA system to monitor various stations in the electric distribution system.
- Monitoring computer equipment on an hourly basis to determine if system or computer problems have arisen and notifying supervisor if so.
- Routing telephone calls received during regular working hours to proper departments.
- Recording all trouble calls and station activities, and preparing daily reports for the MLP.
- Serving as a liaison between the citizens of the Town of Wellesley and the MLP, especially during emergencies.
- Monitoring all MLP communications as a System Dispatcher.
- Relaying messages between crews in the field and between supervisors and crews when required.
- Transmitting telephone instructions from Eversource Energy to crews working in the field.
- Logging information into daily reports.
- Inspecting batteries, battery chargers, and emergency diesel generators which control station relays and switchgear.
- Performing routine maintenance work in substations to keep the interior and all equipment, including high and low voltage breakers and switchgear, emergency generators, station batteries and chargers, and SCADA, free of dust and dirt.
- Performing snow removal when requested.
