Job Summary
The Activity Assistant plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for residents in long-term care facilities, such as nursing homes and memory care units. This position involves planning, organizing, and implementing engaging activities that cater to the diverse interests and abilities of residents, particularly those dealing with aging issues, dementia, and memory challenges. The Activity Assistant will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to promote social interaction, cognitive stimulation, and overall well-being among residents.
Duties
- Develop and implement a variety of recreational and therapeutic activities tailored to residents' needs and preferences.
- Assist residents with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) as needed, ensuring their comfort and dignity.
- Facilitate group activities that encourage socialization, including games, arts and crafts, music sessions, and exercise classes.
- Provide support for individual residents during activities, offering companionship and encouragement.
- Manage schedules for activities to ensure all residents have the opportunity to participate.
- Collaborate with nursing staff and social workers to identify residents' interests and needs related to aging issues.
- Document participation levels and feedback from residents to evaluate the effectiveness of programs.
- Assist in planning special events or outings that promote community engagement.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in caregiving or working with elderly populations is preferred.
- Knowledge of dementia care practices and memory care strategies is highly desirable.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage schedules effectively.
- Experience in event planning or recreational programming is a plus.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a compassionate approach towards residents.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment while also being self-motivated.
- Familiarity with social work principles related to aging issues is beneficial.
- A background in nursing home settings or long-term care facilities is advantageous.
