About this role:

Wells Fargo is seeking a Senior Counsel to join the legal team supporting Government Relations and Public Policy team within the Public Affairs Section of the Public, Regulatory, and Corporate Affairs Division of the Wells Fargo Legal Department.

The Senior Counsel will support public affairs activities, including the coordination of Legal Department efforts on advocacy on proposed state and federal laws and regulations impacting multiple business groups and/or enterprise functions, and preparing briefings on developments for senior Legal Department leaders.  This position may also work on Trade Association related matters and other regulatory developments.  The successful candidate will join a team of professionals who are responsible for supporting the Government Relations function in Public Affairs. Such candidate will be able to easily interact and manage relationships with partners throughout the organization (including businesses, Government Relations, different parts of the Legal Department, control partners, and risk partners) and external resources (including contract attorneys, trade associations or law firms).


In this role, you will:

  • Research and analyze laws, regulations, and rules to assess applicability to Wells Fargo
  • Instruct and liaise with outside counsel as required.
  • Provide guidance to management on legal and regulatory matters impacting business strategy and policy or claims against the Company.
  • Proactively identify policy, legal, and regulatory matters pertaining to area of expertise, and evaluate the legal risk and impact.
  • Independently resolve moderately complex issues and lead team to meet deliverables.
  • Exercise considerable discretion and may serve as the primary legal contact for assigned clients.
  • Collaborate within the department and across business and staff functions to address legal and risk issues in a manner consistent with the best interests of Wells Fargo.
  • Coach, mentor, and provide oversight for less experienced attorneys or staff,
  • Lead initiatives of varying scope and complexity.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with partners across the Legal Department and the Company and influence timely advocacy of new and proposed legal or regulatory obligations.


Required Qualifications:

  • 4 years of Law experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education.
  • Active State Bar membership or the equivalent in a country outside the United States


Desired Qualifications:

  • 3 years of practicing as an attorney with a major law firm, regulatory agency, or in-house law department
  • 2 years of experience advising complex financial institutions on regulatory or advocacy matters.
  • Familiarity with trade association engagement of large legal departments.
  • Familiarity with the state and federal legislative and advocacy processes
  • Familiarity with the federal rulemaking process
  • Familiarity with enterprise risk management frameworks and functions and regulatory expectations for risk management at large banks and financial holding companies
  • Ability to analyze legal issues in substantive law in area of practice and provide effective advice to clients on complex legal matters.
  • Strong ability to think independently and provide credible challenge.
  • Effective organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritizing skills
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to take an active role in the education, mentoring and training of less experienced team members.

Job Expectations:

  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time.

Pay Range
 

Reflected is the base pay range offered for this position. Pay may vary depending on factors including but not limited to achievements, skills, experience, or work location. The range listed is just one component of the compensation package offered to candidates.

$120,400.00 - $262,600.00
