JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Medical Assistant – Orthopedic Surgery
DEPARTMENT: Orthopedics
REPORTS TO: Office Manager
Job Summary:
Medical Assistants in Orthopedics are responsible for providing both administrative and clinical support under the supervision of an orthopedic surgeon to help ensure the efficient and safe operation of the orthopedic practice. This includes direct patient care and assisting with a variety of orthopedic procedures and post-operative care.
Supervisory Responsibilities:

Duties/Responsibilities:
Clinical Duties:
- Rooms patients, obtains and records vital signs and patient histories in the EMR system.
- Assists the orthopedic surgeon with minor in-office procedures, such as joint injections, wound care, and suture/staple removal.
- Applies and removes orthopedic durable medical equipment (DME) including braces, slings, immobilizers, and splints.
- Assists with casting and splinting for upper and lower extremities.
- Provides post-operative dressing changes and wound assessments.
- Prepares injection trays, sterile instruments, and assists with fluoroscopy-guided injections (if applicable).
- Provides patient education for surgical procedures, rehabilitation protocols, and DME use.
- Administers injections (e.g., cortisone) as directed by the physician.
Administrative Duties:
- Schedules surgeries by coordinating with hospitals or surgical centers, verifying details with patients, and preparing pre-operative paperwork.
- Orders and restocks clinical supplies and ensures exam rooms are properly maintained and cleaned.
- Ensures compliance with OSHA and HIPAA regulations at all times.
- Performs data entry, appointment scheduling, and assists with front desk operations as needed.
- Answers phones and addresses patient inquiries related to appointments, medications, and follow-ups.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Strong multitasking and time management skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Professional phone etiquette and effective communication skills.
- EMR experience preferred; familiarity with eClinicalWorks is a plus.
- Ability to work well in a team and adapt to a fast-paced clinical environment.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Certified Medical Assistant (CCMA or equivalent) required; experience may be considered in lieu of certification.
- Prior experience in Orthopedics or Surgical specialties highly preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of standing, walking, and occasionally assisting with patient transfers.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Manual dexterity required for handling instruments and orthopedic equipment.
