An Infection Control Registered Nurse (Infection Control RN) is responsible for preventing and managing infections within healthcare settings by implementing infection prevention practices, monitoring and evaluating infection rates, and ensuring compliance with infection control protocols. The Infection Control RN works collaboratively with healthcare teams to reduce healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and promote a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor infection control policies, procedures, and practices in alignment with regulatory requirements (e.g., CDC, OSHA, Joint Commission).
- Monitor and track infection rates, outbreaks, and trends, using data collection methods to identify areas for improvement.
- Educate staff on infection prevention strategies, such as proper hand hygiene, PPE use, sterilization techniques, and environmental cleaning.
- Collaborate with clinical teams to investigate outbreaks, conduct root cause analysis, and recommend corrective actions.
- Lead infection prevention training programs for healthcare staff, including education on outbreak control, surveillance, and reporting protocols.
- Develop and maintain infection control databases, reporting systems, and data analysis to ensure compliance with internal and external reporting requirements.
- Assist in the development and implementation of infection prevention programs related to antibiotic stewardship, catheter-associated infections, surgical site infections, and other HAIs.
- Perform audits, inspections, and surveillance to ensure compliance with infection control policies and procedures.
- Act as a resource for healthcare providers on infection prevention practices, offering guidance and recommendations to improve patient outcomes.
- Collaborate with environmental services, housekeeping, and other departments to ensure infection prevention protocols are followed throughout the healthcare environment.
- Develop and maintain infection prevention and control education materials for staff, patients, and visitors.
- Respond to infection control-related questions and concerns from patients, families, and healthcare providers.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and safety committees to enhance infection control practices.
- Monitor compliance with hand hygiene, PPE usage, and other infection prevention standards.
- Education:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) accepted.
- Licensure:
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
- Certification:
- Infection Control Certification (CIC) preferred but not always required.
