What are the responsibilities and job description for the Legal Assistant position at Weltman, Weinberg & Reis Co., LPA?
Position Purpose: Under general supervision, the Legal Assistant assists attorneys by performing legal work requiring basic knowledge of legal procedures, methods, and terminology by performing the following duties.
Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks:
- Receives inbound calls/emails and directs the requests to the appropriate person/internal department.
- Contacts internal and/or external customers, attorneys and courts via mail, fax, telephone, or e-mail to provide or request needed documents, missing information, court costs and to provide status updates.
- May prepare routine, department specific documents and correspondence.
- Sets up and/or closes accounts according to established procedures.
- Performs computer data entry to update account files.
- Reviews files, mail, and standard legal documents to gather information and locate missing or incomplete records.
- Contacts client, debtors, attorneys, and courts for further instructions, status updates, and additional information
and documentation. - Negotiates payment arrangements and sale or return of assets/collateral for attorney/client approval.
- Processes and follows-up on post judgment executions.
- Forwards accounts to out of town counsel and serves as liaison between client and attorney.
- May take and process debtor payments.
- Maintains current knowledge of general legal procedures, deadlines and procedures for appropriate documents,
office equipment, and software in general use in the legal community. - Complete all required training applicable to assigned position.
- Additional duties as requested or required.
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- 2 years relevant office experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Paralegal certificate a plus.
- Professional demeanor with clients and co-workers.
- Organized and detail oriented to meet deadlines.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent computer skills using Microsoft Office products with the ability to type 45 words per minute.
Compensation and Benefits:
- $19.55/hour
