Position Summary : Under general supervision, screens, certifies, and provides comprehensive nutrition assessments to participants for the WIC program while providing participant centered services according to federal guidelines, rules and regulations. Such individuals will have the minimum of a high school diploma with nutrition experience, education, and training that have been certified by local or state agencies to be competent for the position. An Associate or Bachelor’s degree is highly preferred.

  • Determines program eligibility in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations and procedures.
  • Explains program procedures, regulations, processes, and time frames to applicants and representatives.
  • Conducts interviews and accurately documents information on residency, income and family situation in a computerized participant database.
  • Obtains, evaluates, and documents measurements of stature, weight, and hemoglobin.
  • Conducts nutrition assessments and evaluates dietary intake patterns.
  • Performs follow-up on low-risk clients. e Provides participant-centered nutrition education to participants individually or in groups according to age, category, health risks, and family needs.
  • Provide individual nutrition counseling and group education to low-risk clients.
  • Evaluate family needs for health care, financial, and social assistance in order to make and document appropriate referrals. Refers clients to other community health and assistance programs.
  • Schedules and re-schedules participant appointments according to processing standard requirements.
  • Assigns and tailors appropriate food packages for eligible participants based on age, category, health risks, and family needs.
  • Issues food benefits for eligible WIC participants.
  • Documents all nutrition assessments and education in the computer database.
  • Promotes breastfeeding and breastfeeding support activities. e Maintains security and inventory of food benefit supplies.
  • Plans and participates in community outreach activities.
  • Attends meetings, trainings, and conferences as required.
  • May conduct individual and group nutritional counseling sessions and breastfeeding classes.
  • May conduct nutrition group classes for clients.
  • Performs Certification Specialist duties and other duties as required or assigned

Education / Experience :

Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) from a four-year college or university, or one to two years related experience and / or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Ability :

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Ability :

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability :

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills :

  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Publisher, Outlook, Microsoft Edge)
  • Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Etc.)
  • Certificates and Licenses :

  • High School Diploma
  • Associate or bachelor’s Degree is highly preferred.
  • Nutrition experience and education preferred.
  • Bilingual Spanish Speaking preferred.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities : This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
