What are the responsibilities and job description for the Civic Engagement Fellow position at Wesleyan University?
Reporting to the Executive Director of the Allbritton Center for the Study of Public Life, the Civic Engagement Fellow will work closely with staff and offices across the Allbritton Center to engage students and support faculty in civic engagement endeavors. This position provides support for civic engagement activities on Wesleyan's campus.
Responsibilities include:
Program Support
- Provide promotional support, data collection and reporting, tech assistance, and event support for Allbritton’s civic engagement efforts.
- Meet regularly with Directors of the Allbritton Center for the Study of Public Life such as the Jewett Center for Community Partnerships, the Patricelli Center for Social Entrepreneurship, the Civic Engagement Minor, and others.
- Assist with the implementation of cross-departmental special initiatives such as managing communication with institutional partners and students, coordinating speaker series, and facilitating student assignments.
- Assist with the implementation and further development of the Civic Engagement Practice course (CSPL120); including developing supplemental programming, writing course materials and communications, working with and advising students, managing course assistants, and conducting assessments.
- Attend Engagement Council meetings, record minutes, and provide an “on-the-ground perspective” informed by engagement with students and student groups.
Student, Staff, and Faculty Engagement
- Support Allbritton Center student outreach efforts, attend student fairs, appropriate Wesleyan Student Association and student group meetings, help design communications directed to students.
- Support the Koeppel fellows in their community engagement with the Wesleyan Argus and the wider community.
- Refer individual students and student organizations interested in civic engagement to appropriate community or campus partners.
- Help organize meetings and foster the development of Allbritton affiliated student organizations.
- Help maintain and identify online resources and tools for student leaders and students interested in civic engagement.
Communications and Reporting
- Coordinate all communications for the Allbritton Center, including but not limited to the Wesleyan ENGAGE blog, newsletters, social media, posters, and other print material, while also sharing information via other Wesleyan channels.
- Assist with designing and developing reports about Allbritton’s civic engagement activities.
- Assist with the creation and maintenance of a comprehensive database of community partners for civic engagement activities.
Community Engagement
- Help coordinate Allbritton Community Advisory Board meetings, record minutes, and provide an “on-the-ground perspective” informed by engagement with students and student groups.
- Help facilitate the Center’s Diploma to Ballot initiative designed to increase civic engagement amongst young people.
- Promote the university’s civic engagement interests at public meetings and events.
This one-year fellowship provides support for civic engagement activities on
Wesleyan’s campus.
This position is required to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree and experience working with civic engagement initiatives, community service projects or social entrepreneurship programs. Student experience will be considered.
- Demonstrated strong interest in and commitment to civic engagement.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a range of partners; and deploy creative problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and work collegially with individuals of different backgrounds.
- Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects effectively and simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite of applications including Word,
- Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
- Demonstrated experience with social media and blogging tools, preferably including WordPress, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Previous experience leading civic engagement initiatives.
