What are the responsibilities and job description for the HVAC/Utility Mechanic position at Wesleyan University?
The Physical Plant team is responsible for operations and maintenance of Wesleyan buildings and grounds. The team includes a staff of skilled tradespeople who maintain and repair campus buildings and associated equipment. The physical plant team also operates the Central Power Plant.
Reporting to the Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Shop Working Foreperson, the HVAC Mechanic is responsible for preventive, planned and corrective maintenance and small projects in university owned properties. Work scope includes licensed and unlicensed work on building HVAC and refrigeration systems.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to :
- Maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing of all HVAC systems including , but not limited to high, medium, and low pressure duct systems, air handlers, fans, controls, drive systems, boilers, chillers, cooling towers, air conditioning units, dehumidifiers, humidifiers, chilled beam systems, split systems, small and medium sized heating boilers, hot water and electric baseboard heating, window air conditioners, refrigerators, steam to hot water converters, geothermal heating and cooling systems, and solar heating systems.
- Fire and smoke damper inspection and testing .
- Transporting, lifting and installing air conditioners, boilers, air handlers, furnaces and other related equipment and supplies using ladders, extension ladders and platforms.
- Coordinating support with other Physical Plant trades and outside contractors as needed
- Performing all duties as assigned including similar work on other University buildings
Physical Demands / Working Conditions include Balancing, Climbing, Carrying, Pulling / Pushing, Reaching, Repetitive Movement, Sitting, Standing, Twisting, Bending, Lifting (50-100 lbs.), Climbing ladders, and working from platforms and heights as needed
This position is full-time, 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year, and is in the physical plant bargaining unit. Typical work hours are Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm with 1 hour lunch break.
This position may be required to work frequent overtime shifts which may include returning to work between shifts, nights, holidays and weekends as directed or called.
This position is classified as essential personnel. Positions that are designated as such are required to report to work / remain at work even if classes are cancelled and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
