What are the responsibilities and job description for the Information Technology Network Technician position at West Baton Rouge Parish Council?
GENERAL DISCRIPTION
Under the technical direction of the Manager of Information Technology and the general administrative direction of the Executive Assistant or the Parish President designee, performs advanced technical work in the areas of maintaining and repairing the Parish Local Area Network (LAN), Wide Area Network (WAN), Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), Voice over IP (VoIP) and Telecommunications Systems, Access Control Systems, Audio/Video Systems; including Parish enterprise-wide server systems. Work involves installation and continued maintenance/updating of hardware, software, coordination of services, servers, network and domain administration including file and network security.
An employee may be required to work unusual working hours, as well as twenty-four-hour call for situations needing immediate attention.
Performs other work as requested.
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
- Provide level 2 technical support; Confers with end-users, co-workers, and/or IT team members to assist in resolving advance problems that develop; calls for assistance as necessary to correct the problem.
- Assists in the development and implementation of Information Technology standards, policies and procedures; Assists in the development of long-term planning for the Parish's network infrastructure; Assists with documenting system procedures for use by other personnel.
- Manage hardware and software asset tracking and life cycle stages
- Manage tools that monitor, detect, and report system events as deemed necessary by the Manager of Information Technology and approved by the Executive Assistant.
- Monitors anti-virus and IDS/IPS software for potential risks to the network infrastructure; respond to potential threats; Assesses vulnerabilities as they are released and works with the anti-virus and IDS/IPS systems to ensure the environment is protected against new risks.
- Create and manage website and GIS content and user rights
- Setup and preconfigure user workstations, peripherals, printers, access points, and network equipment for deployment
- Terminate network cable and fiber optic cable
- Installing and updating approved software
- Procurement of approved hardware
- Create new user accounts and email addresses
- Provide training to ensure information security awareness for employees, contractors, and other information technology system users; Provides technical training for lower level technical personnel and end users
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Advance knowledge of technical hardware and software; Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange/email systems, Server Management, VMware, GIS mapping, website management, telecom systems, mobile devices, audio/video systems, Cisco network equipment, firewalls.
- Ability to work on multiple projects; Effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
- Ability to sit for extended periods.
- Ability to be highly self-motivated and detail oriented; Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented environment.
- Ability to use written, oral, and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with co-workers and non technical end-users with various levels of technical knowledge.
- Ability to stay current with new technological developments.
- Ability to apply good work habits in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department.
- Problem-solving: IT Technicians often have to interpret a problem and determine the best way to resolve it. This requires the use of critical thinking, as the IT Tech may need additional information that isn’t provided in order to satisfy the customer or employee.
- Patience: IT Technicians work closely with their customers. Patience is necessary for this field. Often the clients don’t understand what is happening with their system and may not describe it properly. Patience will benefit the IT Tech in understanding the problem and working toward a solution.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A baccalaureate degree in computer science or a related field or three years of professional level hands on experience in installation, maintenance, and support of Information Technology systems.
Must be able to pass background check
