The WCU Paint Shop Foreman will lead and manage painting projects and work orders from start to finish. The shop foreman will have a strong background in painting techniques, team management, project coordination, tools, materials and the hazards and safety practices of the painting trade. The foreman will work closely with faculty, staff, and the shop team to deliver exceptional results on time and within budget.
This role requires excellent communication skills, leadership skills, attention to detail, and the ability to solve problems effectively. As well as being able to work under pressure and meet deadlines. The paint shop foreman must have the ability to use scissor lifts, bucket truck, man lifts, scaffolding & ladders both for interior & exterior work. Must have the ability to lift and move objects weighing fifty pounds or less.
Responsibilities include:
- Ensure that all painting tasks are completed efficiently, safely, and to the highest quality standards.
- Ensure all painting work meets quality and safety standards according to all state, federal & university codes and requirements.
- Review work orders daily in CMMS. Assign, schedule & close out work orders with all necessary data.
- Utilize a mobile device for accessing & completing work orders and maintenance workflows.
- Submit project estimates of materials & labor hours from project plans, scope, blueprints and/or walkthroughs.
- Supervise, train & mentor shop team of painters, manage equipment, supplies & vehicles on various campus projects.
- Prepares annual employee performance reviews on all assigned direct reports.
- Resolve any issues or challenges that may arise on maintenance projects and within shop.
- Make routine decisions in the absence of on-site supervision.
- Coordinate project work with other shop foreman as needed.
- Order and manage painting materials and supplies.
- Mix paints and match and blend colors and finish with surrounding surfaces.
- Applies water-based or oil-based paints, stains, varnishes, and other coloring materials to a variety of interior and exterior wood, masonry, metal, and other surfaces using brushes, rollers, and spray guns.
- Ability to apply paints, stains, varnishes, and other finishes using brushes, rollers, and spray guns to a variety of interior and exterior surfaces in accordance with standard practices of the trade.
- Assembles and disassembles scaffolding; hauls and erects ladders; cleans brushes, rollers, spray guns, and work areas; and makes minor repairs to equipment.
- Prepare surfaces to be painted by stripping paint and sanding surfaces using heat guns, sandpaper, sandblasters, scrapers, chemical paint solvents, or vacuum-type sanders.
- Perform minor repairs to surfaces to be painted using spackle, plaster, or other appropriate materials.
- Caulks window frames, door frames, and other areas
- Removes the glazing compound, replaces broken glass, and re-glazes windowpanes.
- Perform other related work as required.
As a member of the Facilities Divisional staff, this position is deemed essential. Essential employees must remain or report to work during partial or full day closings of the University due to hazardous road conditions, emergency circumstances or for other reasons. The selected candidate must be available to work overtime as required.
- Two years as a Painter (commonwealth title);
OR
- Five years of experience in the painting trade preparing, painting, coating, and finishing surfaces, including two years performing skilled painting work;
OR
- An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes two years of performing skilled painting work.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Formal (technical school) painting training and education.
- Experience as a Painting Supervisor or similar role.
