The Academic Support & Advocacy Center (ASA) works to help support retention and close equity gaps for WCU students. The Center was established in 2022 as a new decentralized advising structure with the goal of providing holistic, collaborative support to undergraduate students. ASA also serves as a centralized structure for the institution’s student success coordinators and student advocates who focus on supporting students’ adjustment to college in the following domains: academic, cultural, emotional, financial, intellectual, and social.
The ideal candidate will value teamwork and a commitment to developing the academic, professional and personal well-being of students. Will help coordinate activities and processes that emphasize a strengths-based approach to student success. Will have experience working directly with students in a professional capacity at the college level. Be able to effectively communicate and collaborate with diverse campus partners including students, faculty, and staff. These on-campus positions are eligible for limited hybrid work but are not remote. The ability to work occasional evenings and weekends is required.
Responsibilities include:
Support and Holistic Student Care
- The Student Success Team Lead (STL) serves as a team lead for respective college grouping
- Understand the experiences and needs of assigned student populations to design targeted support programs
- Collaborate with campus partners to create clear, coordinated pathways to student resources
- Monitor cases, student engagement, and caseload trends to ensure responsive, data-informed care
- Use student records and data to proactively identify and address barriers to success
- Recommend and implement strategies to improve student support outcomes in collaboration with leadership
- Maintain a caseload of undergraduate students, offering individualized, holistic support
- Provide proactive outreach and interventions to promote retention, engagement, and academic success
- Connect students with appropriate university resources and personnel based on their need
- Participate in student success and retention initiatives across campus
- Ensure consistent, equity-minded support aligned with university goals and student success best practices
Leadership
- Serve as a lead resource for SSCs in assigned colleges, offering guidance, mentorship, and support
- Assist with onboarding, caseload distribution, and clarification of academic policies and procedures
- Provide ongoing training and share best practices for holistic student care
- Foster a collaborative team environment by encouraging communication and trust
- Act as a backup for SSCs when needed to ensure continuity of student support
Academic Operations & Registration Support
- Guide students through critical academic milestones such as registration, scheduling, and pre-term requirements
- Utilize university systems to track student progress and tailor engagement efforts
- Partner with department chairs to understand academic needs and design support solutions in collaboration with ASA leadership
- Identify systemic challenges and offer solutions to improve student experience
- Ensure compliance with FERPA and maintain confidentiality in all student-related interactions
- Master’s Degree
- Three years of experience working in higher education with a focus on student success, advising, or student care
- Experience working and leading teams at the professional level
- Experience working with diverse student populations and understanding their unique challenges
- Experience working in higher education systems such as but not limited to a student information system, early alert systems, learning management systems
