Position Summary
The Phlebotomist plays a crucial role in the healthcare team by collecting blood samples from patients. This position requires proficiency in performing venipunctures and capillary punctures, ensuring that specimens are collected accurately and safely. The Phlebotomist is responsible for labeling and handling specimens correctly to maintain the integrity of the samples and prevent contamination. In addition to technical skills, the Phlebotomist must exhibit excellent patient care, providing a calming and professional presence to alleviate patient anxiety and ensure a positive experience. This includes explaining procedures to patients, addressing their concerns, and ensuring their comfort throughout the process.
The Phlebotomist must adhere to strict safety and infection control protocols to protect both patients and healthcare workers. This includes proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), sterilization of equipment, and disposal of biohazardous materials.
Accurate record-keeping is essential, as the Phlebotomist must maintain detailed patient records and documentation of all procedures performed. This role also involves preparing and maintaining phlebotomy equipment and supplies, ensuring that all tools are in good working order and readily available.
The Phlebotomist may also assist with other laboratory tasks as needed, such as processing specimens, performing basic laboratory tests, and supporting other healthcare professionals in the dental office.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipunctures and capillary punctures to collect blood samples.
- Ensure proper labeling and handling of specimens to maintain sample integrity.
- Maintain accurate patient records and documentation.
- Prepare and maintain phlebotomy equipment and supplies.
- Follow infection control and safety procedures, including the use of PPE.
- Provide excellent patient care, addressing concerns and ensuring comfort.
- Assist with other laboratory tasks as needed.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Certification in Phlebotomy (e.g., from the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent).
- Previous experience as a Phlebotomist preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.

Work Schedule
The Phlebotomist will be notified of the work schedule on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis. The Phlebotomist’s schedule is subject to change (daily/weekly hours may increase or decrease) according to the needs of the practice. Evening and weekend hours may be required. This position is paid on an hourly basis.

The essential functions of this position will result in the following: hazardous exposure (chemical and infections)—constantly; non ionizing radiation (welding flash, microwaves, sun, etc.)—frequently; radiation (x-ray, radioactive, isotopes, etc.)—constantly; noise (loud/repetitive, 85 decibels per OSHA standard)—constantly; and personal protective equipment (PPE: respiratory masks, latex gloves, face shields, etc.)—constantly.

General Dental Office conditions. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The dental office environment may result in employees being exposed to toxic chemicals, radiation, infectious bodily fluids and materials, and increased noise level. This position assumes high risk.
Independent Action
Under the general supervision of the Office Manager, regular duties performed by the Phlebotomist may require occasional independent judgment. The Phlebotomist must consult with her/his supervisor regarding patient problems or confrontation, policy issues, expenditures, and unusual problems.
