What are the responsibilities and job description for the Temporary Summer Scholars Camp Counselor position at West Des Moines Community Schools?

6 positions available. Camp Counselors will work 1 mandatory training in May (date TBD) and the month of June.
Assist WDMCS teachers and staff with the facilitation of ESOL programming. Includes assisting teachers in the classroom, helping students complete projects, providing supervision for students, and being a good role model for youth.
QUALIFICATIONS

- Knowledge of and respect for children with diverse needs and abilities as well as language and cultural backgrounds.
- Ability to relate well with children; meeting the developmental and care needs of children ages 5 to 14 years.
- Ability to stay organized.
- Ability to serve as a positive role model.
- Dependability.
- Ability to anticipate problems and take preventative action.
- Ability to effectively work with parents with diverse backgrounds, needs, and concerns.
- Ability to communicate effectively with adults regarding difficult child behavior and ability to problem solve.
- Ability to lead and create a positive experience for program participants.
- Fluency in another language is preferred (Spanish, Hakha Chin, Arabic, Swahili, Tigrinya, Dari, Pashto preferred)
Education
Current high school or college student
Experience
One year of successful experience working with children in a caregiving environment. This can be paid or volunteer.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Relate and interact with children using positive reinforcement and effective communication.
- Be knowledgeable of and follow all the rules and regulations as they relate to WDMCS.
- Promptly report as scheduled to assigned building to ensure safe supervision of children.
- Maintain a clean, sanitary, orderly, and safe environment.
- Help set up and put away all materials and equipment.
- Report maintenance/custodial problems to the supervisor.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with and show respect for children, other junior counselors, program staff, and parents.
- Greet children and parents as they arrive; say good-bye as they leave.
- Communicate children’s behavioral problems and expectations to parents and supervisor.
- Maintain the confidentiality of the children served.
- Complete all safety training as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Mobility as needed to supervise groups of children.
