CUSTODIAN
REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Maintenance and Custodial Services
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The custodian is responsible for maintaining security, cleanliness, and minor maintenance of all assigned West Haven Community House facilities. The custodial position is a physically demanding position that requires work that is standing, walking, lifting heavy objects, and operating cleaning equipment. In addition, the custodian is responsible for the upkeep of waste disposal at sites, report safety issues when observed and complete routine cleaning schedules as assigned. The custodian is expected to clean all unsanitary environments following OSHA & Bloodborne pathogen safety guidelines.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma
- Three years of custodial experience
- Knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, products, and equipment
- Knowledge of workplace hazardous materials information systems
- Must be able to obtain and maintain training as required for position (OSHA, Bloodborne Pathogens, etc.)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Must be physically able to perform the duties of the position which may require talking, hearing, lifting unspecified weights, standing, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, stretching, crawling, pushing and/or pulling
- Must be able handle or feel; reach with hands and arms
- Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, follow instructions and procedure manuals particularly on the use and application of cleaning chemicals/products
- Must be able to write routine reports and correspondence
- Must have ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form
- Must have ability to use a calculator and comprehension of basic math calculations
- Must be able to work both independently and as a team member
- Must be able to lift at least 30 lbs. on a regular basis; 50 lbs. on an occasional basis
- Must be able to use heavy cleaning machines, i.e., buffers, strippers, carpet cleaners
- Must be able to use logical reasoning to make decisions in performance of job
- Must be able to show initiative and attention to detail while following a checklist for daily tasks
- Must be able to use ladders or step stools when required in work assignments.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Clean and sanitize classrooms to WHCH standards following checklists and procedures trained on to ensure all flooring is swept/vacuumed and mopped, toilets and sinks are cleaned and sanitized as well as touchpoints and countertops.
Perform cleaning and related activities such as removing snow or debris from sidewalks and stairs using hand-operated tools or small power equipment (snow blower, shovels, lawn mower, leaf blower, weed whacker).
Use and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools, auto scrubbers, extractors, high pressure washers, high speed buffers and vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture, etc.
Provide security for buildings, grounds, and parking lots while on duty. Lock and unlock assigned buildings on scheduled times. Check for unlocked doors and windows, report any unauthorized occupants, turn off lights.
Maintain inventory of supplies needed and advise supervisor when need to be replenished
Set up facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events, etc. and assist groups utilizing facilities, when required
Attend safety meetings and other related trainings; including but not limited to cleaning methods and techniques, new products, First Aid, Blood borne pathogens, CPR, etc.
Follow instructions regarding the use and storage of chemicals and supplies.
Safely operate all vehicles and other job-related equipment.
Move boxes, furniture, equipment, supplies, and tools as assigned.
Attend to emergencies and report to supervisor immediately.
Support and comply with all WHCH policies, OSHA rules, Federal & State health and safety regulations and guidelines, etc.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
